This Burrito Has Me in a Toxic Relationship. And I Like It
Champion Burritos in Shawnee is not a restaurant. It’s a spiritual reckoning wrapped in foil. A burrito so powerful, it should come with a warning label and a therapist. I’ve been devouring the El Campeón Chicken Burrito like it’s a coping mechanism. And honestly? It is. The chicken is so juicy, so perfectly seasoned, you’d swear someone’s Abuela is in the back whispering prayers over the grill and threatening violence with a wooden spoon if it’s even one second overcooked.
I add shrimp. Why? Because I love myself. And also because that shrimp is always cooked like it’s being judged on national television. Tender. Flawless. No chewy nonsense. It’s giving “Michelin star, but make it Latin street food realness.”
And the extra hot salsa? Oh, baby. That salsa didn’t come to play. It came to destroy. It’s the kind of heat that makes you see God and text your ex. I keep eating it knowing full well it’s going to send me into gastrointestinal therapy; yet I chase it like it’s my birthright. It’s not just hot. It’s vengeful. Like someone found out your secrets and bottled the feeling.
The setup? Listen, this place has zero interest in impressing you with aesthetics. It’s basically a walk-up window with a couple of humble tables and a vibe that says, “You’re not here for the ambiance, sweetheart… you’re here because your taste buds are dead inside and we’re here to revive them.” And revive they do. This isn’t a sit-and-chat joint. It’s a grab-your-bag-and-eat-it-in-your-car-while-moaning-like-you-just-saw-Zendaya walk-by kind of place.
The guy working the front? Absolute gem. Chill, kind, never frazzled. Honestly, he deserves a trophy and a skincare sponsorship.
Champion Burritos is that girl. She’s not loud. She doesn’t post selfies. But she’s running laps around every overhyped spot in town. This is food that punches you in the mouth, kisses your forehead, and then asks for five stars. And you give it. Because how could you not?
15/10. Would break up with someone mid-date just to go...
Read moreMy review is based on eating at numerous hispanic restuarants.
There was a wierd bathroom stink smell as you entered, not sure why as the place just opened. The food was okay, but not any better than Chipotle in my opinion and defintely not any better than the local mexican resturant El Potro which cost around the same for the same type of food we ordered. The chips were not that good either according to my family and myself and the salsa did not look good so we avoided that. Drinks are $3.00 which is overpriced for the cup you get look like a size medium or small. I guess if you eat there then maybe you could get refills. Didn't see any different sizes of cup on display so I didn't order any drinks. The burrito I had wasn't bad but they don't have any type of cheese sauces to put on their burritos, just a chipotle sauce.
Overall they need to figure out why it smells the way it does, possible a sewer drain needs to be cleaned out and then work on getting more different sizes of cups for different size drinks and then I would also have more monitors for the entire menu to display rather than it change to other menu items. I would also figure out which type of cheese dips if you are going to have and get those on your menu asap.
I would give this place a 3 star but since they just opened, I gave them a 4 star and hopefully the review what I wrote and make those changes and fix the horrible smell.
The chips also tasted pretty bland and not any better than store bought chips. I also think the salsa needs...
Read moreThis is a small size restaurant with a simple design. You're not paying for an extravagant atmosphere, just a simple spot for food. I spoke with the manager and he recommended a steak and shrimp burrito. It was a little pricey, but it was also so big I only ate half and saved the rest for later. They had three choices of sauces. I tried the red colored mild and the green colored medium. They both had quite a bit of zing and a lot of flavor. The steak in my burrito was quite good. Tender and flavorful. The shrimp was good too. They didn't overcook it, which is the usual at other restaurants. Overall I thought the food was good and the staff was polite. The tables were clean so I didn't see any aftermath from the lunch rush. I find most places let the garbage linger these days so I was happy to not see that here. If you are tired of chipotle, I...
