I visited Nick and Jake’s in Shawnee for the 2nd time this year on Tuesday, April 2nd. It was happy hour and I was celebrating a friend’s accomplishments with a few of my girl friends. The first time I visited Nick and Jake’s Shawnee I had a great time. The bartenders Ashley and Tanner answered all my questions about menu items and accommodated an allergy I have that was in the chiefs punch. Tanner and Ashley hand made the chiefs punch for me to ensure that I would not have an allergic reaction. It was happy hour and very busy but I felt welcomed so this prompted me to come back. This pass Tuesday was the complete opposite. One female bartender, Krys I believe, ( short, dark hair, and wore a bandana) touched the rim of my glass and straw with her bare hands after she was coughing a bit and sneezing. I’m not sure why the straws do not remain in the paper so that the customer can touch their own straw without putting their mouth on other people’s hand germs. And if you are going to have exposed straws then the servers should be grabbing the straws with napkins. I thought the way she served my water was completely unsanitary. I asked the other bartender for a new glass and straw. I also thought Krys ‘s energy wasn’t very welcoming so I did not feel comfortable ordering from her.
As the evening went on, I ordered an appetizer from Ashley. Once my order came out, the food was okay, but the tall man with the long hair dropped my plate on the bar. I thought the plate was hot considering the way he dropped it. He rushed off before I could get his name so I asked the bartender what his name was and I believe she said Carter. When Carter came out to drop off my friend’s orders, he dropped their plates on the bar to the point I was scared that the plate could’ve cracked, busted, and sent glass flying every where. Hot food could’ve also splattered. So many things could’ve happened that could’ve been a potential lawsuit if either me or my friends were hurt.
I confronted him because the rest of the staff did not address Carter’s behavior. I asked him was he mad and he said no, he just got called into work and it’s busy. I said that’s not our fault and you shouldn’t be slamming plates down and providing this type of service. He said everything was fine and walked off.
Krys and Ashley did apologize but the damage was...
Read moreThis one was harder to rate. The waitress was very helpful. The manager was helpful but did not meet. I have to describe the scenario. My girlfriend ordered the smokey chicken pasta and I had the 16oz Ribeye. My girlfriend asked the waitress about the pasta. She was advised to get the bacon and corn hash on the side which she did and agreed after it was a good choice. As for my Ribeye. I will start by saying it was very tender. Surprisingly tender. It ends there. I asked how it was cooked as it had me wondering flat top or grill. There were no grill Mark's and it had a flat top seat type look. I was told grill so was shocked. The waitress asked why. I said first very impressed with how tender it was but the lack of flavor was bothersome. It didn't taste like a flat top but the way it seared was odd and the lack of seasoning. She then said yes next time I come I need to ask for cajun seasoning but it isn't listed on the menu. I find this odd that it isn't on the menu and that it must be an issue that she immediately told me that so seems like it is a common issue for patrons. I did not complain as I again said very pleased with the tenderness. She came back a few minutes later and said the manager was giving me dessert. I didn't complain or anything they were kind and from a customer service aspect looking to help me return for another visit.
Now here is why it is hard to rate. The service was good. The food was overall decent. The overall cost was not worth a return visit. I have had comparable places that provided me a much better tasting steak where I don't have to ask for a secret spice not on the menu and get a salad with it to boot. When I dine out I look more for food quality of flavor over how nice the staff is. Don't get me wrong it does play a part and prefer a good balance but most places strive to provide good service so the taste of what is provided is what gets me to come back. That is why I give it a 3 because the service was good and overall food was decent just lacking for me and at their prices of midrange steak it was not going...
Read moreI tried this restaurant because my friend highly recommended it. We were a party of 5 for lunch. The place was clean, with a muted, inviting decor. We were seated quickly and the waitress was very attentive; she got our drinks timely and didn't rush us ordering food. She subtly passed by frequently and only asked if we were ready to order when we'd had time to look at the menu and lay them down. She kept an eye on our drinks to ensure they didn't run out. She was perfectly attentive without being intrusive. Four individuals each ordered a different salad; they appeared fresh and each enjoyed the salad they had chosen. The servings were generous and the plating, exceptional. I love Reubens, with one available on the menu I ordered it with fries. When I was served the Reuben, I was disappointed to see it was a 'packaged' type of corned beef (that one might use for chipped beef on toast). I'm used to sliced slow cooked corned beef brisket, but decided to give it a try. The bread, cheese and sauerkraut were delicious. The meat was tough around the edge of the sandwich (likely due to it's thinness and sticking out of the sandwich when heated to melt the cheese). The center was only slightly softer. I eat 1/2 of the sandwich and 1/2 of the fries (which were cooked but not crisp); the remaining 1/2, I took to go but don't plan to eat - a first since I eat what I take to go. I did tell the waitress she might let people know that the corned beef isn't from scratch; she genuinely asked what the difference was and I let her know. Some people might truly enjoy this type of corned beef. I did not. If we try the restaurant again, I will try something other...
