"fruit will have bugs sometimes!!" A comment made by an employee who obviously has no idea what it is actually like in a restaurant. Sure, fresh fruit will sometimes contain bugs in the containers they are shipped in, but not when its been cleaned and cut. There was absolutely no excuse to feed someone a roach, and then turn around and only take off 25%.
The comment shows how abysmal the service has been since Covid, and to be honest, it really is a shame. They used to have the best sushi around, and they used to have friendly servers.
The server I had the last time I was there was rude, and never checked on us. Other than bringing our food out at completely different times, which is unacceptable in a restaurant, because a table's food should all come out at the same time.---Not fifteen minutes apart. At least, in my over ten years of experience in the restaurant industry, that's what we were taught. The only other time she visited our table was to slap the bill on it. She was rude. She always has been. I've had her in the past, and she acts like she hates her job. She never talks.
Other than poor service, the gyoza that was served to us has a spoiled, almost chemical taste to it, and the sushi tasted wrong. Almost as if it had sat out too long, or wasn't as fresh as Sumo's normally serves. After this, everyone who dined with us got sick. I thought it was food poisoning, but chalked it up to being a stomach bug. After seeing the pictures of a roach stuck on the bottom of a freshly cut pineapple, I think I was wrong in assuming it was a stomach bug. I think my first assumption of food poisoning was right.
The restaurant itself is always unclean recently. They servers don't do a good job at tidying up, and it is obvious that they don't care. I'm not sure if anyone there does care. Ants crawling all of the table, biting you occasionally. It gets worse the warmer it gets, and with the way they leave food and crumbs everywhere, its no wonder why they've food roaches and other bugs in the establishment.
I get that its hard to keep pests out of restaurants. Its an endless task to do, but cleanliness is the first step. To be honest, a sushi restaurant that serves raw fish should be cleaner than most, considering what they're serving could make someone severely ill. Why they haven't called an exterminator out, I don't know. The restaurant I worked at we had a "bug night," where we covered the things that needed to be covered, and put things up for the guy to come out and spray for bugs. I never saw a single bug, other than the occasional fly that flew in with someone. (Keep in mind, I wasn't just a server at this establishment, I also helped manage.)
Sumos need to fire and rehire an all new waitstaff. They need to get people in there who actually care about their job, and the establishment itself. I told myself after repeated bad experiences with that server that I would not be back. I had almost convinced myself to give it one more try, and hopefully my experience would be better with another server. (If I was lucky to get someone else, considering she is always there.) However, after seeing the roaches in the food, I won't be back. Not for a long time. Until they hire all new people, and call an exterminator, there's no point in going back to an establishment that doesn't care.
Someone said online that Sumo's has gone downhill rapidly, and I fully agree. I steered so many people there, and its heartbreaking to see what it is today. I think the reason for that is the staff that they've hired. You have to have people that care, and its obvious that they don't. I really hope they get back to the old Sumo's soon. Until then, I...
Read moreThis was our daughter's recommendation to visit this place for great sushi "like we had in New York". Unfortunately this recommendation didn't meet my expectations. Food was very average, not bad but absolutely nothing special, you're expecting something different for that price. Simple rolls are $9-10, special rolls $16-20 and higher. My wife had a roll for $16, it was ok but not perfect. I ordered a bento box just to try different pieces, the price was $16 too. For that money you got 3 sashimi (salmon, great), 3 nigiri (ok) and 4 pieces of roll (baaad), all the chief 's choice. Also my bento box included like 2 tablespoons of seaweed salad and 3 pieces of pineapple as a "fruit". Honestly the portions were small and we left hungry. Also we got the fried ice cream for my wife for $6 and that was a very big portion even for both of us. The ice cream looked cool but tasted so-so and we tried it but couldn't finish. So we got everything you see in the pictures and paid $50 for this (with tips). I think it's overpriced for the average food. Also I have to say this place looks not as clean as it should be and you feel your table is sticky. You feel like you're in a cheap Asian buffet, you can hear like the staff arguing in the kitchen and someone coughs there. This all makes it difficult to enjoy the food. Despite that our young waitress was very nice and that stops me from rating this place lower. Sorry, I would say this is not our perfect sushi place and...
Read moreif I could give this place 0 stars I would. Sadly it’s not based on the food but the service is absolutely the worst I’ve ever had. I called in an order, went to pick it up to find they gave it to someone else. In theory not that big of a deal, mistakes happen. What defines a business is how they respond. It took nearly 10 minutes of convincing three of the servers that I was the one who called in the order. After they realized they made a mistake. They called the person who took the wrong food and told them to bring it BACK! They then asked me if I wanted the food they brought back. Ummm NO! They said do you want us to remake the order. Let me think?- YES! I waited for another 25 minutes for them to remake it. Meanwhile the person with the wrong food came back and instead of giving them their food and at the least giving them a discount- they credited the amount and charged them full price for their meal! Then after almost an hour after I originally called in the order they brought my food over and rung it up- charged me full price after their screw up and barely an apology. I honestly wouldn’t have mind waiting if they had just made some effort to right the wrong. There was none of that and for that reason we will...
