Our experience started off fine here with good coffee and friendly waitresses, but turned sour at the end. My french toast was good, but my boyfriend's pancakes were really undercooked and it took a long while for the waitress to come back to us to pay our bill. While I was waiting, I added up the bill myself and it was around $20 after tax. When I asked for her to take care of our bill right before she was going to help a guest she'd already assisted several times before (and came in after us) I said I'd only need $16 in change from the $40 I gave her. She came back with $16.58 in change so I left the coins thinking I was settled including the tip I wanted to leave. As I open the door to leave I hear her say "seriously?!" and I turn back around to look at her. I politely ask her what my total was since she never told me and I only calculated what was on the tab in front of us at the counter. She said it was $23. I told her that I was confused because that wasn't what I added up and that was why I asked for the $16 change. I gave her $5 and left. She didn't say anything further. The prices here are low, but I wouldn't go back or recommend it especially since it's cash only and their ATM charges $2.75. I can't help but feel a certain way considering how other customers were given way more attention than us who were clearly from...
Read moreI really wanted to like Betty’s — it’s a charming, old-school spot and one of the few breakfast diners in Shepherdstown — but the experience fell flat.
Service was incredibly slow. A couple who arrived at the exact same time I did received their food, ate, and left before my meal even made it to the table. There was no communication or acknowledgment from the staff, just a long, awkward wait.
What really concerned me, though, was that dishes were being washed right in front of everyone behind the counter by hand. The water didn’t look anywhere near hot enough to properly sanitize, and I didn’t see any sanitizing solution being used — just regular dish soap. In a restaurant setting, that’s worrisome and honestly made me nervous about getting sick.
When the food finally came, it was bland and forgettable. Nothing terrible, but definitely not memorable — the kind of breakfast that feels more like an obligation than a treat. Betty’s seems to be the beneficiary of being one of the only breakfast options in town rather than excelling on its own merits.
Also, they’re cash only, which feels outdated in 2025. There’s an ATM inside, but it hits you with a $2.75 fee — a nice little side profit for them, I’m sure.
Overall, between the slow service, questionable sanitation setup, and underwhelming food, I left disappointed and...
Read moreWent in was about no one in there. Got sited down didnt get asked what drinks we waited for around 10 minutes finally got our drinks waited another 10 minutes before we got asked about food. Then waited around 35-45 minutes for our food. Didnt get asked if we wanted another drink until the end of the whole thing. Went to pay 100% forgot to give a tip by mistake 100% my fault was sitting there ready to go back the lady came out being loud asking about the tip and the service. I've never seen or been in a place with so bad service and rude people running it. Also who sells fries for a side but you have to pay 2 bucks for it. They also charge 2.65 for each drink even tho they dont give u refills without you being forced to ask. My cup was out of my drink for easy 45 minutes at the end of the table. The whole time till the end the place had 3 or 4 groups max so it was not hard to do 4 groups. Not a place worth going too nor would I ever recommend this place to anyone. Also the fact they ran a business but dont do card is also a very big downside, they have a atm that costs like 2 3...
