I swore I'd never go back to Go Fish after trying them in West Reading years back because its fusion style sushi not authentic/traditional but decided to try the new location after 8 years & hearing from friends that it was better than before. Big disappointment again mainly from the lack of service & taste. I had a party of 3 around 8pm and the restaurant had maybe 5 or 6 tables occupied between indoor/outdoor so not busy at all. Vibe & restaurant is beautiful for sure & the wait staff is extremely kind from what my party could hear. Upon receiving our 7-8 different rolls we had to wait about 15 minutes to eat waiting for the waitress to come back out for us to ask for soy sauce as there was none on the table, no biggie. I had ordered an appetizer special before we placed our roll orders & assumed it just took a while for them to prepare but after another 10 minutes the waitress came back out & I asked about the appetizers which she had no clue about because the prior waiter forgot to tell her when they swapped tables earlier & upon checking to see if they had more left they just ran out of the appetizer specials I ordered first (now annoyed). The 1 spicy crab roll was very rich in flavor & definitely different from the traditional way its made & the rolls were beautifully presented. But I'm not sure if it was because it was the end of the day & just left over older tuna, the other 2 rolls of mine with spicy tuna was so pasty like thick butter (not minced) and had an extremely fishy taste to them all that it overpowered any other flavors of different sauces & fish in the rolls which my friends agreed with on theirs. The soy sauce they provided seems to be the extremely high sodium type that it couldn't be enjoyed even with the wasabi or ginger on small dabs. Fast forward after all that, I had asked for the check for our table and after getting my credit card run & paying I realized she never provided me with a receipt so we waited & it took over 20 minutes again for someone to pop out the back door that I had to ask the other worker if he can grab our waitress because we'd like to leave & I just wanted a copy. She finally came out with the receipt & stated I didn't realize you needed one. I personally don't know of any restaurant establishments that don't give two copies when presenting the bill (one for merchant/one for customer) or at least ask but besides that it would still be nice to be checked on for refills if patrons decided to stay a little longer after settling a bill. Our stay probably was about 45min too long due to the lack of checking up on us & with the terrible fishy tuna quality it definitely put a bad taste in my mind again. Prices are definitely higher than most Japanese sushi houses & even the more premium ones but that's okay if the quality of seafood is great as well as service but I highly question this place because of the bad experience. I'm personally shocked to see how many reviews say this is hands down the best sushi they've ever had as this is no where near traditional-authentic made sushi. I feel many haven't tried actual authentic places that aren't so fusion/Americanized. I could see many reviews are from friends & know the owners & staff so that makes an impact on the reviews but definitely doesn't give an honest view from an outside perspective. Reading some of the not so good ones, every one of them had similar issues with the wait times, pricing & lack of good service on not so busy days...
Read moreWent for dinner and hoo boy it was bad. We had been to Go Fish one time before and out of 3 dishes mine was the issue. I had the Seafood Curry and the rice was very undercooked and hard. Overall the dish was flavorless. Hard to imagine a curry dish without flavor yet someone succeeded! We didn’t think we’d go back but decided after a couple of months to try it one more time. Big…and I mean huge…mistake.
First things first. This was an early Tuesday evening. They weren’t busy in-house. I don’t know about take outs but in-house only had 3 occupied tables including our table of 2 and customers at the bar.
My husband and I both ordered the fish stew to start. The broth was flavorful but the rest of the ratio went like this: 2/3 chopped al dente onion and celery. 1/3 tomato chunks and a smattering of fish bits. Especially in mine. My husband gave me some of his fish. You could tell the vegetables had recently been added and hadn’t been simmered with the broth. Not appetizing at all. It took about 25 minutes for our soups to arrive. In the middle of eating just the broth and looking for fish bits, our meals turn up. Had we actually been enjoying the soup this would’ve made things worse but as it was it ended up being only a minor annoyance. Note to all restaurants: if a table orders appetizers, please let the table finish them before you bring out the entrees. A second small note to servers: please tell all of your customers about the daily specials so they don’t overhear them being told to the folks at the bar after you neglected to tell them. The idea of daily specials is to sell them, right?
My husband had the sea bass(?) and I had the salmon. Where to start? The pistachio encrusted sea bass was odd, to be kind. The pistachio mixture was just on the top and not fully baked on. The fish itself was bland. The asparagus was over cooked and limp. The mushrooms were just a really weird addition to the plate and added nothing to the dish. But the worst was the au gratin potatoes. They smelled off when cut into and tasted awful. Old. Dry. I can’t even explain it. My husband managed some of his fish, no asparagus, half a mushroom and a bite of the potatoes.
For my part, the salmon was actually good but it doesn’t need the lemon sauce on top. My green beans were limp, spotted brown, and over cooked. The chick pea garlic mash was ok but not brilliant.
Honestly, the food overall was so bad that it had us questioning freshness and authenticity. Most of our meals went uneaten and believe me this is not an inexpensive place to eat. Drinks were good, our server was good with the exception of not telling us the specials. The manager stopped by to see if all was ok and honestly didn’t seem too bothered about what we told him. To be fair we didn’t say much to him and didn’t make a big deal about it. We simply decided to never return. Which is a shame. It’s a nice atmosphere and the staff are friendly. But the food was inexcusable. The two stars is to at least acknowledge the drinks and server were decent.
Sorry Go Fish. I wish that the we could rave about the nearly $150 dropped on this disaster. But we...
