Mex Express Grill — Restaurant in South Bend

I really like the food here, it’s very delicious and usually served hot. However, I’m big on customer service, especially in restaurants. I’ve visited this place numerous times and my experience has been the same. It’s usually the skinny guy working. When I come in, it’s like he’s upset to be there. He doesn’t speak or create a welcoming environment. He doesn’t even look at you while preparing the food. Even with no one in the restaurant, or a line, it feels like he’s rushing me through the order so he can get back to doing what he was doing before I came. I love this place and don’t mind spending money here for great authentic Mexican food, but I can’t say I will recommend to anyone based solely on the customer service. My initial 4-star review is now 3- stars. I was really disappointed in my recent rip there. I miss when the original guy would be there when they first opened. This other taller guy has poor customer service skills and was totally out of line dipping in the conversation I was having with my son about what he wanted instead of making what I requested, and then got upset and dumped the food back into the bin when he got confused. All that aside, the al pastor filling for the tacos was not hot and was totally dried out. The pico was sad and lacked color and freshness. Mex Express Grill is my go-to when I can’t or don’t want to cook. It’s set up kind of like Chipotle, but local. You get to choose your ingredients as they prepare your meal, and everything is fresh. The portions are generous, and the staff are attentive and friendly.

The dining area is consistently clean, though I go there mostly for carry out. Getting into the parking lot can be tricky when there’s traffic on Ironwood, but it’s worth it.

I love coming here because it feels like a healthier option compared to burgers and fries, and it’s just as quick. (Unless I’m ahead of you in line with my whole family 😉)
