There are places which try to be fancy just to be fancy and expensive...then there are gourmet restaurants which serve as a canvas for local chefs and servers to shine in a way which compliments the city they call home. Roselily in South Bend, IN does just that. A dinner there is an evening well spent, and based on the experience I had with my family tonight, I'll absolutely recommend this place to anyone who knows food and finds themselves in South Bend.
The atmosphere of Roselily is clean and professional but not presumptuous. The tables are bare, chairs repurposed, and overall ambiance understated. But that is good. Because at Roselily the food and wine and service speak volumes where things like white tablecloths and stemware would otherwise whisper. They serve a mean brunch, I'm told, and it makes sense for the room. But the dinner options here are no joke, and it seems to me that dinner is where this place shines. There is an entire plant based menu, and it boasts everything from small plates to an eight course tasting menu, just like the regular menu which changes with the season. Their wine list, while not extensive, has enough to please anyone, and their bar is armed to the teeth with great local beers as well.
Instead of opting for the tasting menu, I ordered the duck breast which arrived perfectly cooked and resting on a sweet potato purée with greens and hazelnuts. My wife got the best plate at the table, a vegetarian dish of sautéed root vegetables served with brown butter, sage, ricotta, and Parmesan cheese. Believe it or not based on the zip code, the oysters were amazing, and the liver pate was something I'll order again every time I see it on the menu. While espresso would have been nice with the incredible apple cheesecake dessert we shared, the meal opened and closed with such grace, I can ask for nothing more. The servers danced around the chaos of my table as I enjoyed my meal with a tired one-year-old and my parents who are not spring chicken...the service was fluid, inclusive, and excellent.
In a post-Covid dining climate, Roselily is a welcome breath of fresh air, and I hope the team there continues to push the boundaries of food in South Bend. Eat here. You'll be...
Read moreFirst of all I want to say before they changed the name and menu L Street Kitchen was amazing. The food was solid and the menu was great. Now that it has become Roselily I really do not like it. The menu is not that good. They would not let me substitute the chorizo on the breakfast burrito for another meat or avocado. I do not care for chorizo due to its spicy and greasy. I was assured it was not spicy. It's fairly spicy and loaded with grease as chorizo should be. The breakfast burrito from L Street was my favorite breakfast item. This new burrito is a down grade. Also my wife used to get the avocado burrito. Not it's a not meat veggie burrito with no avocado but still the same price. Also the salsa that came with the burrito is horrible. Smells strongly if pepper and store bought hot sauce. A bad combination. The old salsa was way better.
Also I saw they took the breakfast tacos off the menu. Very sad day. Those were amazing. I feel that Roselily is trying to hard be creative, fresh, and new with the menu compared to L Street and it's just not that good at least for breakfast. I can assume people want a good solid breakfast. Nothing wild and crazy just good and dependable on the taste and what you will get. I want to be able to go in and be able to order one of a few items and know it will meet my expectations every time.
I understand there needs to be changes once in a while. But while you have regular customers you should try to accommodate when there are changes they dont like. They would not allow me to get sausage or bacon. How hard is that to do? Not very hard at all. This is one of the most disappointing things a restaurant can do. When there is a simple request and it cannot be made. Why? Needless to say I probably will not come back nor recommend Roselily to anyone unless...
Read moreThis place hits all the marks and checks all the boxes. My husband and I moved here from NYC and got very accustom to quality and creatively curated food, didn’t think that existed in South Bend until we stepped foot into Roselily. ( and I imagine it didn’t before Roselily) Absolutely everything was phenomenal. Our server Dani, was smart, witty, educated and most importantly so passionate about the menu. Her excitement got us even more excited about the meal. Everything she suggested was a homerun. We ordered the burrata with stone fruit, oysters, fried green tomatoes, pork tenderloin and gnudi. We could not stop smiling at how wonderful everything was paired. The chef, Amen, was clearly born to do this and is a real talent and gift to this area. This is how food and dining should be thought of and you can tell how much he must care about his establishment from The way he even plates his food. The pricing is beyond reasonable, allowing guests to enjoy multiple creations, and making this a spot I know my husband and I will frequent often. From the tea cups to the chocolate dessert everything about this place is a win and a joy, and my only regret is not dining at Roselily sooner. This place could hold its own in any big city and its a real treasure that it’s here. I imagine this chef will continue to do big things, and I’m extremely...
