Nestled in the heart of South Boston, VA, Mexico Viejo Mexican Grill boasts an impressively large seating area that invites diners to settle in and savor the vibrant atmosphere. As soon as you step inside, the colorful decor and warm lighting envelop you, setting the stage for a delightful culinary adventure. Whether you’re dining with family, friends, or that special someone, there’s a welcoming vibe that makes you feel right at home. One of the standout items on the menu is the Supremo Burrito. When it arrived at my table, it was a sight to behold—its generous size wrapped in a warm, soft tortilla, glistening with a hint of sauce that promised a burst of flavor. The first bite was a fusion of fresh ingredients and zesty spices that danced on my palate. While I found the rice a tad overcooked, it paired nicely with the burrito, which, despite not being as "supremo" as its name suggested, was still a satisfying experience. The flavors were spot on, and I appreciated the freshness of the ingredients. Accompanying my meal was a beef tamale I had ordered, only to receive a chicken one instead. While I had my expectations set on beef, the chicken tamale turned out to be a pleasant surprise. It was crafted differently than any tamale I had tried before; the texture resembled a formed cornmeal rather than the traditional corn dough. It was intriguing, and despite the mix-up, it was delicious and hearty, served alongside rice and beans that complemented the meal well. The staff at Mexico Viejo are friendly and eager to help, though I did find them a bit forgetful. My orders needed to be repeated several times, and I ended up with the wrong tamale. However, their enthusiasm and willingness to accommodate made the experience feel more personal rather than frustrating. They genuinely care about your experience, which adds a layer of warmth to the dining atmosphere. The building itself is beautiful, with its open seating arrangement creating a sense of community among diners. It’s the type of place where laughter and conversations blend seamlessly with the clinking of dishes, adding to the overall charm. In terms of value, Mexico Viejo offers a solid dining experience for a mid-range price. It’s perfect for families looking for a casual night out, couples wanting a cozy dinner, or food enthusiasts eager to explore flavorful Mexican cuisine. The complimentary salsa and chips were a nice touch, with the red salsa being particularly enjoyable, though I wasn’t a fan of the green salsa, which had a mayonnaise-like texture. Overall, if you find yourself in South Boston, VA, make sure to swing by Mexico Viejo Mexican Grill. It’s a place where good food and a warm atmosphere collide, making it well worth your visit!

I would not visit this restaurant alone, but I would not turn MY nose UP at someone else’s insistence to go. We went around 11:00 on a Saturday when the restaurant 1st opened, so it wasn't busy @ ALL. I'm not a fan of the booth seating. It’s enough seating for ONE, but TIGHT for TWO. MY BIGGEST problem with OUR visit to THIS restaurant was that OUR server did NOT speak “Good” English. We had to point our items out on the menu, and BOTH ME & MY girlfriend's orders were still messed UP! She did not understand OUR questions, and appetizers were not suggested. MY drink was NOT refilled, and she was posted UP right behind ME at HER station, clueless. I don’t blame HER. I blame whoever put HER in the position as a waitress. Perhaps if I spoke Spanish, this would not have been an issue, but I DON’T speak Spanish. MY nachos were OK, although I did not get what I ordered. Plus, if YOU look at the picture I posted, YOU can see an undesirable chunk of tomato that should have been discarded before being served. Understand that even mentioning a problem to MY server with MY order would have led to MORE confusion because of the communication barrier. Still, MY girlfriend corrected HER order with the HELP of another server. At least MY daughter’s meal was correct. The Choriqueso that MY girlfriend ordered was REALLY good, and I would revisit the restaurant for that menu item alone. Besides the tight booths, at least WE enjoyed the atmosphere. The “Vibe” was right, and the music was good.

Got takeout. The chicken and spinach enchiladas were pretty good. I was looking forward to trying the chile relleno tonight but wish I would have skipped it. I'm not sure why but it was laid on a bed of what looks like wattery sloppy joe that's been run through a food processor. I'm not sure why they put a pile of meat under my chile relleno. The chili itself wasnt bad once i scraped the soggy meat off of it. They gave me chips but no salsa or sauce. Had to go back and ask for a container of white sauce and ended up getting enough for about 6 chips. Ordered cilantro rice. It was salty rice with a little pile of cilantro on top, so I guess it was all in the name but I would skip that next time. Ordered sauteed vegetables ended up with what looks like steamed broccoli, carrots and cauliflower. Very Bland and flavorless. The Jack Daniels chicken was pretty good. The chicken was cooked well. The sauce was nothing special. Tasted like Jack Daniel's BBQ sauce from the grocery store. I would probably eat here again but will be picking different items for sure. The online menu also showed that they had apple cheesecake but there was no cheesecake to be had.

We've been here multiple times because it was so impressive of a Mexican Restaurant. We've taken out of town relatives and it's wonderful, flavorful food. We checked the hours of operation before heading out and saw on Sat where they are open until 11. It was around 7:30 when we arrived. We were seated and my husband ordered a drink while I used the ladies. I returned to the table and his drink was dropped off by our waitress not even asking me what I'd like to drink. This was OK for me because I have waitressed and know how stressful and busy it can be. I simply walked over to order my own drink and it was delivered. We asked for more white sauce, never brought it and our waitresses proceeded to clean the entire time after entering our food order and never brought the white sauce until asking a 2nd time. Our food arrived, and it was wonderful never a disappoint on the food however, we thought it was very rude, and distracting while we are trying to have a nice quiet meal for multiple waitresses to be sweeping all around us, slamming chairs, chatting about not paying attention to their tables. We will go back in the future but you may not want to seat people in a section later that is an early closing section as it's very rude to have your staff very loudly cleaning up all around someone who's trying to eat and enjoy the company of their spouse for 1 hour of...
