What in “Mema’s home-cooked, finger-lickin’, soul-food-upliftin’” restaurant did I just walk into?! Listen… I’m trying to type while eating, but right now the food is winning over the review.
Now, you all know me — I’m blunt, I’m honest, and I’m a full-on foodie snob. (Insert dramatic pause with one finger raised for silence.)
This food? Absolutely addictive. We’re talking layers of spice and flavor that sing. And yes — they even offer different heat levels for my Vermont folks who prefer things a little gentler. This is a judgment-free zone, clearly designed so everyone can enjoy the food, the vibe, and the welcoming energy.
The ambiance is warm and nostalgic. The smooth jazz, the rich aromas, the cozy seating; it instantly transported me back to my dad’s living room (bless his soul) with its leather chairs, wicker basket furniture, and the air perfumed with spices.
This is the kind of mom-and-pop gem that makes you want to bring your kids in for a real cultural experience instead of another cookie-cutter franchise.
If I had to nitpick, it would only be the background noise from the redemption center and passing cars outside. But honestly — the moment you take that first bite, the stress, the noise, and the rest of the world just melt away like Thanos snapping his fingers.
I can’t wait to come back and explore the rest of the menu. Thank you, Thingz from Yaad, for bringing authentic flavor and soul straight to...
Read moreIf you’re looking for true Jamaican flavor, this kitchen delivers. The food is rich, deeply seasoned, and clearly made with a respect for traditional techniques.
The jerk chicken is a standout—smoky, perfectly spiced, and grilled just right. The balance of heat and flavor is spot on, with a marinade that sinks into the meat, not just sitting on the surface.
The oxtail stew is tender and full of depth. Slow-cooked until it falls off the bone, it comes in a thick, flavorful gravy that pairs beautifully with the rice and peas—which are light, aromatic, and cooked with just the right amount of coconut milk.
Fried plantains and festival are fried to a perfect golden brown—crisp edges, soft center, not greasy. Everything is clearly made fresh, and it shows in both the texture and taste.
Portions are generous, service is friendly, and the food speaks for itself. This is authentic Jamaican cooking that doesn’t try too hard—it just...
Read moreI’ve been to Thingz twice now, and the food is very very good. I’ve gotten the Curry Goat, Oxtail (only on Tuesdays) and Curry Chicken and they’ve all been excellent.
The meat is tender and flavorful. The key is to get it spicy as it really does accentuate the flavor. Keep in mind, this is not Chipotle, you’re not paying $11 for a bowl of affordable-processed food, you’re paying about twice as much for a decent portion of an authentic, good quality meal.
Owner Shaneall is super friendly and accommodating, and my boy Joel knows what he’s doing in the kitchen and always takes a moment to come out and say hello.
I’ll be a regular here for sure as it’s a super central location and already looking forward to bringing more of my people through to show them what the...
