Hanser House, a locally owned gem with generations of culinary chefs continuing the family tradition. Chef, and owner, Kieth serves up an amazing balance of both surf and turf. From the complimentary hush puppies to the caramel cake dessert every course was cozy, soothing, and satisfying; similar to the family friendly ambiance. This is becoming a local fav for me as I continue visiting the area. The menu is not overwhelming, and the ambiance is quaint. A number of other establishments in the area are overpowering in their presence and underwhelming in their foods taste. Hanser house is the well needed opposite to other restaurants in the greater myrtle beach area. Below is a review of each dish from my recent visit. If you have questions on other items not posted, feel free to ask I'll share my opinion on what I've tried. Spicy Crab Dip - One of many appetizers or small plates available it has the right balance of creaminess and seafood flavor. Many restaurants I visit a crab dip is heavier on the cream rather than the crab. This dip balanced the cream with a spice and also plentiful amount of crab. Atlantis - This is a well balanced surf and turf option for someone craving a meal for two. There's bountiful local creek shrimp adding a semi sweet tang to the meal, along with fresh crab-meat and scallops. The cream sauce is buttery enough to enhance the flavor of these scrumptious seafood sides, and the use of fettuccine noodles is the right component for sauce thickness. On top of it all is a perfectly cooked filet - where the outside mm of steak is charred and crisp, and the internal is perfectly pink throughout. Each bite provides a satisfying initial chew with a juicy center. Seafood Platter - For $2 over a Litchfield combo this plate provides a sample of all the locally caught fish. As a healthy approach I chose to have each member grilled. The scallops were juicy and lightly salted to enhance the flavor, while the shrimp and flounder were sauteed with butter and local spices including a hint a smoked paprika. Delish! It's topped off with a crab cake that is hefty on the crab! While fried is an option these lighter seafood varieties are best grilled. Stuffed Flounder - Hollowing out a flounder fillet with a crab and seafood mix stuffing is genius. While this flounder is a bit dry in comparison to the solo flounder fillet it can be expected when using a blackened approach. The blackened seasoning enhances the flounder giving a balance of zest and kick, and the stuffing helps cool the taste buds. The creamy fettuccine is similar to that of the Atlantis giving a nice balance and cleansing your palate for another bite! 10 Layer Caramel Cake - Finishing the meal with this cake is a nice change from the heavy brownie I've had in the past. This multi-layer caramel cake is smooth throughout, it's almost hard to know where a layer ends and the next begins because it's so well out together. Each layer is well placed with a thin caramel layer. As each layer of the cake is compressed in a bite you can feel the delicious caramel squeeze out enveloping your mouth in a smooth sweet sensationalism. If it's available when you visit give it a try to taste a sweet heaven!
Overall, I'll be coming back, and hope for years to come this proprietor stay...
Read moreMy wife and I stopped in around 6 on October 31, 2019. The restaurant was not too busy and we were seated quickly and served our drinks, salads and hushpuppies shortly after being seated. We both ordered the shrimp and grits, which was also served about as soon as we finished our salad....so far so good. As we both began to eat our entrees we both noticed that the shrimp were very small and not deveined (sandy texture with each bite) there was way too much cheese and it was greasy/seperated and the grits were pasty. We told the waitress after dinner and she said we should have sent them back and we should have but it was obvious to us that she was very busy and we saw very little of her (not blaming her because it was obvious they were short handed and running her pretty hard) . She did send us home with 2 slices of key lime pie and that is what prompted me to write this review. The key lime pie tasted very strange and we finally figured out that not only did it have a big dollop of cool whip topping on top of it, it also had cool whip in the pie filling or something that tasted very much like it. Yuck !!!
Sad because we have been here about 7 or 8 times in the last 10 years and have had good meals up until tonight. There is no way the owners can think that their shrimp and grits or their key lime pie is good enough to serve in a restaurant as nice as the Hanser House at the price point they are selling it for.
You guys can do better, I remember the shrimp and grits from 10 years ago...Bacon, creamy grits, large fresh local shrimp. We may try it again next year, but unless I had assurance the shrimp and grit recipe was changed, I would order...
Read moreI travel frequently to Mount Plaasant from Myrtle Beach. I often pass this restaurant on my way, and I discovered that a former student of mine is related to the owners. Decided to try it one evening on my way to MB around 6:30 pm. Upon entering the waiting area, Granny, as they call her, was behind the register socializing with friends. When she saw I was alone, she INSISTED that I sit at the bar, and when I refused, she just left me there! My wife passed away three years ago, and I highly RESENT being singled out just because I'm one person, like it's too much damn trouble to wait on one individual!
Finally, this surly, dark-haired, fat waitress seated me, acting like she was doing me the greatest of favors! She was so unpleasant and arrogant, I wanted to throw my tea at her. Of course, I wasn't permitted in the main dining room with families; I was seated at a table just off the bar area (Granny got her way!!)! She brought every part of the meal from the salad through the hush puppies and main course with not even a comment.
I'm thinking this restaurant caters to their own special little group, and anyone else who darkens their door is "tolerated"!! After leaving, I thought about going back and telling Granny who I was, but thought better of it. Her granddaughter was a delight in my class, and I certainly hope she doesn't end up with the ugly attitudes of her family members!
Oh, incidentally, I've lived in Myrtle Beach most of my life, and I KNOW the seafood in this area! There's is half rate, to...
