Holt Bros BBQ - Darlington — Restaurant in South Carolina

Hello there fellow food lovers! If by chance you’re reading this review, chances are you're contemplating The Holt Brothers BBQ as your next food destination.

First and foremost, I highly recommend the need for all terrain tires while looking for a parking space. Navigating around several concrete cavities, was quite the excursion.

I must say, I became uncertain about this restaurant selection once I observed an empty dining room during lunch hour. Despite the many vacant booths, the atmosphere was overall clean but it didn’t stand out from any other typical BBQ chain restaurant. Nonetheless, I quickly occupied a corner booth. After all, I came for the food, not for decor. or lack there of.

I waited patiently for approximately 10 minutes before an employee informed me that food orders are intended to be placed at the register prior to sitting. This concept isn’t necessarily unusual when compared to an ordinary Zaxby’s but there is a strong possibility that the restaurant posted signs advising patrons to order food prior to seating theirselves; however, I was anticipating full table service.

After finalizing my food selection, I was escorted to a small buffet table, were individuals have the option between 5 different sauces. I was not pleased with this setup and didn’t understand why each table didn’t have its own variety of individual sauces. My first thought was, are we rationing BBQ sauce? I felt like Oliver Twist, holding out my 2oz condiment cup, asking for more. Lol.

Upon receiving my food order, I was pleased with the plate’s presentation. Being that I’m originally from Memphis, TN, (The home of the world championship barbecue fest), my opinion can be rather biased when comparing outside BBQ. However, I was rather impressed by the restaurant’s pulled pork platter. The pulled pork wasn’t dry, which would indicate how long it sat under a heat lamp or cooked. It was juicy and flavorful and by far one of best examples of good barbecue I’ve had since leaving Memphis.

In addition, I received the sweet potato casserole and Mac N cheese as my side items. The sweet potato casserole was absolutely DELICIOUS!! I would have preferred marshmallows and pecans with the casserole but overall no complaints regarding the pork and casserole. The Mac N cheese was good but not my favorite. The entrée was also served with a slice of toast, however I would have preferred both sides of the bread to be toasted.

Overall, I do endorse this establishment. The food was delicious, reasonably priced and the staff appeared to be rather friendly. In conclusion, I’m happy to give the Holt Brothers BBQ a 4 star rating. This review and rating is based solely on my experience. I look forward to returning in the...

My husband and I were looking for a place to eat that was not crowed. So here we are! The only people were in there was a couple sitting in a booth and a man at the counter. We ordered and I set down at a booth. My husband brought my bottled water to me as he waits for the order. I notice that the bottle was damaged and asked my husband to get me a cup. He went back to ask for a cup and this man told him we don't have cups, I guess he was saying cup for the water because my husband already had a cup of tea. My husband told him the bottle was damaged and we only need a cup. Well, this guy went off! My husband looked back and asked him what his problem was. This guy told my husband "you are in the wrong damn place now". That's when my husband went verbally back at him. He looked at me asked me did I want the food. I told him NO! Got out of the booth, my husband told him to cancel our order and give him his money back and he put that cup of tea back on the counter. As my husband was getting his money that man that was at the counter with us came over to me and apologize for the man because he could not believe how he came off to my husband. I told him he didn't need to do this because this guy is talking about a bottle of water and a $.25 cup. We left and will not return to this establishment. Purchased a Pulled Pork Plate, mac & cheese, hushpuppies, slaw and bun yesterday 06/01/23. The pulled pork was tough, could not eat, mac & cheese was not good at all and at the bottom had hard pieces of something in it. The hushpuppies were not done inside, could not eat. I worked a double yesterday in NC and was unable to call about the disappointment until now, literally 10 minutes ago, today 06/02/23. I called the lady told me she spoke with the owner and he stated that he was gone for a while yesterday and had another person working and that might be why the quality was off but still with giving the knowledge she told me the owner stated they have a policy that they do not do exchanges or refunds, once it leave the store that's on me. How you going to not give me any of my money back and you sold me Raw food???!!! I explained to her no one is going to cut open hushpuppies to make sure they are done or stand in the restaurant and taste test the food before they leave. I am very disappointed with the lack of business orientation and concern for the customer (ME) after I chose their location to spend my hardworking money by which was not pennies- my bill was $17.58.
