Y'all. These are the best donuts in Greenville and it's not even close. The cinnamon twist donut is absolutely enchanting. My daughter put it best - "It's like it puts a spell on you that makes the donut disappear and makes you want more!" It's light and fluffy inside, without being undercooked or gummy in texture. The exterior crust is delightfully golden and crispy without being oily or too dark. The glaze is generous, even, and has that perfect "shell" finish that grocery store donuts never seem able to achieve. And it's just the right amount of sweetness. The cinnamon adds flavor and distinction without being overwhelming. It is not without merit and careful consideration that I rate this donut a 10 out of 10 - a distinction shared by just two other donut shops (Carol Lee in Blacksburg VA and the sadly no longer operating West End Bakery in South Bend IN).
A few criticisms: the sprinkled, frosted, and sour cream (sometimes called old fashioned) donuts were all a bit too sweet. The sour cream on particular had too much sugar in the batter causing the overall flavor profile to more closely approximate frosted cake than a donut. The sprinkled and frosted donuts are glazed first, then frosted resulting in a heavier coating and more sugar than desired. The yeast donuts are also slightly too fat causing some bites near the edges to have more frosting than others.
Other pros: these donuts are super cheap, especially compared to every other donut shop in town. They're really fresh (the donut holes were even still warm, and like the cinnamon twist are simply delightful and in a class of their own). There's good variety. The branding and marketing is somewhat lacking, but often that's inversely correlated with donut quality - the very best donuts can come from unimpressive looking places called "Donuts". You owe it to yourself to experience this place, and I'm confident...
Read moreI made a stop at Lickin’ Good Donut shop in Simpsonville. They have a nice selection of sweet pastries as well as some savory goodies. I’ve been to the shop before, but it was later in the day, and they were sold out on most of their pastries. Today there was plenty of things to choose from depending on what you wanted. Some of their sweet items are apple fritters, glazed and cinnamon coated twists, sour crème donuts, raspberry, lemon, chocolate and Bavarian cream filled donuts, chocolate, yellow and blueberry cake donuts. Some of the savory items were ham, cheese and egg, bacon, egg and cheese croissants, sausage dogs wrapped in what looked like puff pastry. On this visit since I had a variety to choose from, it took me a minute to decide what I wanted. I got a glazed twist, a lemon filled glazed donut and a blueberry glazed cake donut. The twist was fresh and so was the blueberry donut, both were delicious. If you’re in the Simpsonville area during the morning, just drive around the corner of Food Lion, Donut is at the very end, you will be glad...
Read moreMy husband went and picked up donuts for us this morning. We ended up getting a full dozen because of the deal that you get, and what a deal it was. Everything was perfectly fried, nothing overdone or soggy and packed full of flavor. It was one of the best cinnamon twists I've had in a while, perfectly fluffy inside and slightly crispy outside with the perfect amount of cinnamon and sugar all over. My husband's favorite was the yeast donut with the cream cheese filling and I also really loved the chocolate with the Bavarian cream. It might sound crazy but we're going back again tomorrow to get some donuts for family in town. It was absolutely delicious, best advice is to get a dozen and share so that way you can try a little bit of everything to find your favorite. Really was absolutely incredible, I have found my...
