Tokoro — Restaurant in South Pasadena

We've been ordering from here for years but this is the first time we went in person. The parking was a little confusing but we ended up parking in the Gus Bbq lot next door.

The food is top notch. The sushi is some of the best I've eaten outside of Japan, gyoza is meh for me but was alright (it's deep fried and chicken but I prefer pan fried and pork). The salmon sashimi in particular is to die for.

The service we had however was pretty bad. My partner and I felt we were constantly "in the way" and they were doing us a favor by serving us. We didn't feel much hospitality. I mean I get it if you're having a bad day or something but don't let your customers see it ya know?

The atmosphere was cute though, they have some Ghibli props and cute characters near the entrance and the general ambiance was pretty cozy. Just wish they looked our way when saying goodbye as we were leaving.

Excellent place known for its rolls and Central's a spider roll their caterpillar roll their fire roll and other various roles they make excellent sushi rolls they also have traditional plates like a Sashimi plate that runs 22 the $24 and it comes with a good grease amount of fish and of course they have my favorite the grilled salmon for lunch so for lunch or dinner get the salmon Deluxe now I love the sushi tray they got a sushi tray that also is around $20 and you get a good big amount of fish on a tray with all kinds of salmon salmon eggs tuna and every other kind of fish like octopus and other items it was good there that day and that there had the grilled...

Service was really good. That matters, because they have a help wanted sign out. The two servers I saw were hustling to handle the to-go orders, bus the tables, seat guests, and wait on tables. Then a family with 3 young kids leaves, and it took 2 people at least 10 minutes to clean up the mess and reset the table. This was Monday at 6 PM and the restaurant was nearly full. Wow.

Our food was terrific. My miso soup was good, and my wife's tempura and udon were both very good. My yuzu poke special would have been bland, but it came with enough wasabi and ginger to be quite good. More yuzu would have made it better.
