Willard Scoops — Restaurant in South Portland

My son and I drove over from Westbrook yesterday to try this place out. It was okay, but not as awesome as other reviews lead me to believe. My son ordered their chocolate ice cream which was actually pretty good, very chocolatey, like a frozen hot cocoa or a frosty. I ordered their strawberry ice cream - we have a thing for strawberry ice cream and one of us always orders it anytime we stop for ice cream somewhere - and, while it was good, it definitely wasn't as rich and creamy as Beals or Gifford's ice cream and no where near the awesomeness that was Catbird Creamery (we're still looking for a replacement; we miss you so much, Catbird!) Both had an average milkfat content, nothing all that special.

THE BEST HOMEMADE ICE CREAM. More fatty than it is dairy. DELICIOUS! The coffee Oreo and cookies and cream may be the absolute best but they also have fun flavors like “Sunburn” which is strawberry ice cream with a habanero kick. Monkey Business is a good one (cruchy, banana flavor). Wild Berry is super yummy. You really can’t go wrong here. PLUS it’s a quick walk to Willard Beach. Who doesn’t enjoy ice cream and a sunset?

Bonus: they have hot fudge cups to go.

Also.. there are some reviews about the line and not enough employees- this is during COVID-19 so there is only one walk up window available and the line is outside. The service is wonderful. Don’t let those haters keep you from trying...

If you are a local or visiting you NEED this ice cream. I am often a purist (boring) with ice cream but the creative flavors are amazing. My favorites are the coffee Oreo, Pb Fluff and the “Sunburn” is fantastic-strawberry ice cream with jalapeño I think?-just the right balance without anything too overpowering. I have to back up the shop here in defending the price raises-quality homemade ice cream is expensive (even without crazy inflation) as is paying for good labor-the staff/service is great.
