I was disappointed with my visit to Athens Souvlaki resturant today.
I ordered a greek salad with a side of gyro meat and GRILLED onions ON THE SIDE. The cashier/ waitress even wrote ON THE SIDE on the container.
The cook walked over to the fryer and shortly after pulled the basket from the grease. I inquired if those were my onions. I was advised that they were. The cook had dropped them in the fryer instead of putting them on the grill as requested. I stated that i did not want those greasy oinions.
The other cook placed fresh onions on the grill. I looked off and turned back shortly after to notice that the current cook was putting grease on the onion from the excess bin in front of the grill. ( this is where the excess grease and juices are scraped from the cooked food placed on the grill. I got the cooks attention telling him that i dont want grease on the onions. He said that he would drain the grease off.( using the spatchler to push the onions against the wall of the side of the grill) At that point i said nothing as i had decided qiuetly to myself that i would not use the onions.
The oinions were removed from grill and my food was bagged up behind the counter.
I drove home, began to remove the contents from the bag to notice that there were no onions. Not in a separate container or with the gyro meat. I opened the container which housed my salad to find that the cooks had placed the GREASEY ONIONS on top of my salad ruining my entire dinner. DISGUSTING! There was grease all in the feta chesse on the beets and lettuce.
No, i didnt call as i saw the lack of care and concern while my food was being prepared and didnt want the hassel of it alll. I simple tossed the entire meal in the garbage. What a waste of $14.00.
I then sat down to write this review. If you dont know you cant grow. Now you know. I hope you...
Read moreThe unique, homemade pita bread forms the basis of what are, hands down, the best gyros in Metro Detroit. They take their homemade dough, fry it on the griddle with oil/butter until it's flatbread heaven - gently crispy outside, fluffy inside, but still foldable; literally, crack in carbohydrate form. Then, they fill it with sliced gyro meat (spiced beef/lamb mix, cooked in a rotisserie), tomato, red onion, and yogurt sauce. A combo with a small Greek salad will run you about eight bucks plus tip, and you will leave quite full. The service is always quick and friendly - even when it's busy, I'm in and out in 25-30 minutes. Cozy, Greek-themed diner feel; the rest of the menu is other Greek stuff like lemon-rice soup (pretty good), rice pudding (very good), and lamp chops (have not tried), along with your typical Detroit coney island food - coneys, burgers, fries, etc. for the 'meat and...
Read moreAn absolute hidden gem. If you didn't know about it, it would be easy to miss hidden in a shopping center, but once you visit for the first time, I'll bet you'll be back.
The staff is friendly and if you start showing up regularly they tend to remember you. Service is fast, making it an ideal lunch spot. Prices are on point.
However, the best part is the food. The pita that the gyro comes on is simply the best I've ever had. I don't know how they make them so perfect, but it's just the ultimate consistency, texture, flavor, everything. It's almost impossible to go anywhere else for a gyro now because I just find myself dreaming about Athens. I've taken a bunch of co-workers here and they all agree as well. I make it a habit to stop by at least a couple of times for lunch...
