So we arrived last night around 6. I arrived with 2 of my friends and a toddler we were seated after 5 mins. The place was packed. As we sat down the server greeted us and asked for our drinks. I order a margarita right away n my friends needed a min to decide the waiter came back in less than 1 min rushing us to pick a drink he stated were very busy so order. As we ordered our food the drink arrived margaritas they looked odd no salt on the rim just a glass n tasted like syrup very thick n honestly we didn’t touch them the whole time . They brought out food in less than 5 mins after ordering n placed on our table that wasn’t ours. They expected us to eat it when we told them we didn’t order it. They exchanged the food after mins of debate and I have been there over 20 times I wanted a salad but a regular veggie salad was starting at 18.25 which was pricey for just a salad I went ahead and ordered pineapple shrimp that come with rice and beans they brought out just the pineapple ….. with over cooked shrimp… my friends order chimalias and with beef and received chicken n cheese ….. we made them aware and there like this what you ordered…. We sat there only 20 mins out of the group I was the only one who ate my food… my friends got to go containers due to the service was just not up to par… as the bill arrived we saw they didn’t edit or take the nasty slop down margaritas off even those we only took 2 sips … was still full nothing was even touched out the glasss the owners came to us as we told them to take it off the bill we didnot like them we didn’t drink them he said no whatever you order you pay we said no the food was already wrong the drink was nasty we didn’t even touch the water in the table due to the service……. No one of my guest ate but me as we were getting up to leave the owner snatched the to go containers out of my friend hand and said since you no pay for margaritas you get no food to go…… At this moment it was an assault n I told my friends let’s just go tried to pay for the food with my card but they insisted we pay for drinks that honestly was rushed n made wrong the food was half cooked at best slopped in cheese….. beware don’t go if you can avoid the place has went down in the years I am someone who has been going for the last 4 years…… the food sucks …….service sucks and prices are not reasonable red flag when everything on the menu said 17.99 or up for even a...

Xochimilco (pronounced ‘Sochimilco’) is a decent establishment with all the décor and festivity’esque feel of your standard ‘authentic’ Mexican restaurant. Colorful dishes and adornments throughout with the sounds of Mexican music in the background. The service was quick and efficient, although not as personable as you might think, but that’s ok, because I do not need my servers to plant smooches on my posterior for me to have a good meal. Plus, this was in the middle of the lunch rush, so I get it.

The food was delicious. As you are perusing the menu, you get your complimentary chips and salsa. I ordered the carne asada (steak) dish and essentially, it was a fajita dish as it came out with all the fixings and tortillas with the carne asada smothered in sautéed onions. All of the food was tasty. The only observation I will offer, which is a weird one for me, is they have weak silverware…I bent my fork trying to cut the meat. Don’t get me wrong, the meat was not tough, it was just about right with maybe a tad measure on the toughness scale. It just so happened that my fork could not withstand the full weight of its responsibility of holding the carne in place as I morseled it out with my knife. Would still eat though…

This place is worth a shot – come...

So I would give this place a 5 out of 5 stars for the taste of the food alone but I cannot. The service was moderate, our server was fairly inattentive to us. The food was delicious. The reason that I give it 2 stars is because of the cockroach that made an unwelcome appearance on our table. My boyfriend grabbed it with a napkin as soon as he saw it and I was horrified. I completely lost my appetite and couldn’t finish my food. He assured me that Springfield has a problem with roaches and it’s not unusual but I’ve worked in the restaurant industry for 6 years and I have NEVER seen one or had an experience like this. Not to mention that the health inspector would have a field day. So I suppose this is where I’ll leave it. If you want some really delicious Mexican food and don’t care about roaches, go ahead and check it out. Maybe sit outside while the weathers nice enough. If you have a fear of bugs and lack a strong stomach don’t bother. The best part was it took us several minutes to flag down our server and when we showed him the napkin and told him he looked like he wasn’t all that surprised. He apologized to us and took the napkin but he did nothing to remedy the situation. He just gave us our bill and left....

The Fiesta Fajitas pictured were very well prepared. Most places do not cook the vegetables enough, but this place did a great job. The flavors of the various meats all blended well together, and the chorizo was not overpowering, as it sometimes can be. The tamale had too much masa, and not enough pork, but most restaurants do this. The queso was pretty average, and the salsa was above average. Our server was good and kept our drinks filled. I would definitely return to this restaurant if I'm ever in the area again.

This spot is well-liked in Springfield. For several years it has won Best Mexican Restaurant in the Illinois Times', "Best of Springfield Readers Poll." The awards fill up the walls. I’ve gotten the fajitas, carne asada and a burrito on 3 separate occasions and was pleased with all three meals. As a bonus, there is ample seating, so it's a good choice if you're going out with a larger group.
