St. Louis Italian Deli — Gioia’s

St. Louis Italian Deli — Gioia’s

We were looking for the best deli on The Hill and found it. Have now lived in the St Louis area for 4 years and finally made it up to The Hill. We went daytime to find sandwiches. Gioia's came up as number one on a few different lists. We saw how busy it was at only 11:20am and decided it must be good. The surrounding atmosphere on the street was warm and welcoming with a cute little park across from the small building. Walking in, it's a simple layout with a few counters for eating. The menu has about 15 sandwiches and I'll be back to try more. I ordered the Italian Trio. It normally has Mortadella, Genoa, and their famous hot salami. I'm not a personal fan of Genoa, so I substituted it for Capicola. It comes with pepperocinis and onions, then vinegar and oil dressing. Might easily be the best sandwich I've had. I was super impressed with the crusty bread that was a nice crunch into the soft center of the sandwiche. The savory warm flavor meld of the meats were perfect. I was expecting it to be a tad greasy, but it really wasn't. The flavors came through pretty clean. Loved sitting st the counteracts with my wife and daughters listening to the busy work of the team interacting with happy customers. Super impressive and can't wait to return!

2022 Edit: Gioia's switched to a new sandwich bread since my original review. This new bread is, in my opinion, much lower quality in texture and taste. I used to grab Gioia's anytime I was near a location, but after giving this new bread two tries, I am moving on to other St. Louis sandwich shops. Gioia's likely won't disappoint if this is your first trip, but for those of us who had it before the switch, it's just not the same sandwich. Try it once, but if you're looking for a regular spot, look elsewhere. (3 stars) Original Review: Gioia's hot beef on cheese garlic bread (yeah you read that right, your bread options are white, wheat, and CHEESE GARLIC BREAD) with a side of au jus would be my "last meal" order. Hot salami, meatballs.. everything here is amazing. Check out their website for the secret menu (spaceball, ftw) and sign up for their email program to get a weekly $1 off phrase. During lunch hour, especially on the weekends, consider calling in your order to avoid the line. Staff is always great, so are the cookies which are great impulse buys. If all this wasn't enough, Gioia's stocks Vess sodas! (5 stars)

They have some of the best sandwiches in town! I don't eat any of their menu items as is. I have them create me a sandwich which ends up being a little bit more expensive, but they have all of the Italian meats. I also love their bread options. Most of their sandwiches are made on cheesy garlic bread using St. Louis style provel (swiss, provolone, cheddar cheese mix).

I also recommend getting their summer sausage. They have three different flavors. For $10 you get this massive log of summer sausage and it's the best I've had in a very long time. They have a huge wall of chips to choose from, gigantic chocolate chip cookies that they bake each day, sometimes they've had brownies, and during certain times of the year they have soups or chili. They have fountain drinks and glass bottle drinks too. They also have a lot of items for you to purchase and take home to cook with like bratwursts and potato salad and things like that.

It's a cute little place that has been here for a very long time. There isn't a lot of space to eat at the location itself, but there is a park right across the street. There is definitely high traffic at this sandwich shop. You can order ahead of time and I believe they are also featured on either Uber Eats...

So today was my very 1st experience here at the deli and The Hill period. This was recommended from my boss and she let me go get lunch today for everyone. The experience I had was the best ever but the worse. Don't get me wrong the service was immaculate and the employees were even better. I showed up ordered my food and was out within 5-7mins. Upon me leaving my vehicle decided not to start 😥....I tried and tried. I decided to go back inside the deli and asked the employees if anyone could give me a jump and they did not hesitate. 1 employee pulled his jeep and tried jumping me several times but we had no success. I appreciate the dedication and courtesy from him. But the point I'm making is even though I had car issues remember this whole time I still had all our sandwiches sitting in the bag. It was over an hour before anyone received their food from me and the fact that the food lost it's original temps but the flavor and juicy greatness from the sandwich was never lost. This was the best tasting sandwich I ever had on such a horrible day. I will definitely be back and will absolutely recommend this deli to anyone!!! Thank you Gioias for not disappointing me!!! See...
