I have so many amazing memories of my dad taking me here as a kid. A few times a year he would take me and my siblings and let is each pick any one thing in the store. I shared this story with my boyfriend I don't even know how long ago and this Valentine's day he surprised me with an assorted box of chocolates from Merbs. The best part is(because he remembers everything) he knows I LOVE dark chocolate and don't much care for milk chocolate so when he noticed they were mixing in the milk chocolate he asked if they could make it all dark chocolate and they did! Every piece was so delicious and such a great variety of fillings. I'm so glad this place has been able to stick around over all these years.

Established in 1921, Merb’s Candies is a staple! It has served the Saint Louis community for three generations as a family-owned and operated business. Check out the iconic Merb’s sign lighting up South Grand. As you step inside the store, a whiff of rich, decadent aroma almost puts you in a trance. Smells of irresistible melted chocolate, mingling with caramel, vanilla, fruit and nuts… one of everything please. All the chocolates are created meticulously by hand in two locations. They are made with love and the quality is top notch. There are so many delights including assorted chocolates, hard candies, bionic apples, chocolate-covered strawberries, and turtles. There's something for everyone!

I don't like how the woman was looking at me there wasn't a friendly vibe in sight and I've never been to a chocolate store that I had to buzz a doorbell to get in but that was different but I love chocolate covered strawberries so I bought a pound of it for $25 and I'd have to say it looks cheap and the chocolate is waay too thick it felt like I bit into like 3 inches of chocolate before I could even taste the strawberry!

The chocolates at Merb's are some of the best in St Louis. This is an old time European chocolatier which St Louis is known for. I have been coming here for 20 years. Unfortunately, there was an extremely rude and entitled African-American woman at the counter who gave an ugly face like she couldn't be bothered. An extremely unprofessional, unintelligent and unhappy person. There were no customers and she clearly had nothing to do. When I asked if I could pick out an assortment of chocolates, she barked back "We don't do that here." What chocolatier doesn't do that? This is St Louis! We have been doing this for over a century! I have travelled all over the world and have never experienced this type of passive aggressive entitlement from someone, especially at so fine a shop. Seriously, she must have some mental problems or other things going on in her life. Merb's should fire her immediately. Why does such filth get hired at an old time St Louis establishment? She said she was a retired teacher. I feel so sorry for those kids! I understand if someone is having a bad day or if she is just an unhappy grump, which is most likely the case, but for an old time establishment to hire someone like HER? It's outrageous. I am General Manager of a major hotel in St Louis and I know what customer service looks like. This lady clearly shouldn't be around people. She needs to be taught a lesson....

The chocolate covered strawberries were perfection! Walked in a few days before Valentine's day and received great service.

They are only allowing 4 customers inside the store at a time, so there was a small line outside the front door (as to be expected before Valentine's Day). Other days when I have driven past, there is no line. There was a uniformed officer inside the store on the day of my visit. I don't necessarily thing he was needed, but he did add an extra sense of security on s busy day.

There is only street parking available on Grand and the side street, no parking lot. Keep in mind there is a bus stop at this corner and to avoid parking in the bus stop.

Check their website for current offerings. You may want to call ahead if you want to make sure they have what you are looking for. I was interested in their caramel sauce, but when I arrived, they only had their caramel sauce with nuts on top. Obviously, still delicious. The caramel wasn't actually a sauce, but more like taffy. I needed to cut it with scissors or pull really heard to get it our of the container. No spoons!

The cashier was wearing a face shield and she was behind plexi at the register. I felt safe with their social distancing and...

We came here to get some strawberries on Valentine's Day and obviously it was Valentine's Day but it was also not very busy and it was a really weird experience. We got the chocolate covered strawberries but you had to buy a large box of them and you couldn't buy them in smaller amounts but it seemed like nobody wanted to be there and we were really put off by the service. They have a cop in there and he just looms over you the whole time you're there. The lady working there was very crabby and unfriendly she was very insistent on a weird rule that we had to buy at least a quarter pound of anything you couldn't mix or match many things and it was just super unfriendly and a really frustrating shopping experience. We certainly didn't feel welcome at all. The candy was good but maybe get some people in there that don't hate their jobs. You would think they would want to make the process fun and welcoming and that it would be a destination. I don't know what has gone wrong there but obviously the neighborhood is not the best and maybe that makes them all hate their jobs. The candy was...
