Salt + Smoke has already established themselves as a welcome addition to the already crowded bbq scene with their Delmar location, so when I heard that another location wwas planning on opening up, I knew I had to stop in. Luckily I was able to snag a seat on opening day without a problem, mostly because it was off-peak hours.
First off let me just say that when I first stepped into the door, I noticed that the place had a more intimate vibe, cozy seems to be a perfect word to summarize the seating. While the first floor is small, they have managed to fit enough room in to accommodate larger crowds however you will sacrifice some personal space as you get to know your neighbor in some adjacent dining tables. Not to worry, as that gives you an excellent opportunity to take a look at what your neighbor ordered without straining your neck, and trust me you will love seeing what Everyone is eating. While I didn't order an appetizer or any dessert, I was fortunate enough to catch a glimpse at the table next to me indulged, and I can say that I will be doing just that when I return. However in addition to the seating downstairs, you will find another floor of accommodation upstairs, or just grab a seat at the bar for easy access to their quality spirits.
Service here was top notch, our waiter was just fantastic and offered up some great advice on what he enjoyed on the menu and even recommended some substitutions that I wouldn't have thought of. Probably the most important replacement was that I could get the Trashed Wings in place of the Smoked Wings as part of my Bestie Combo.
The food was just as good as the service. I went with the Bestie Combo with Brisket, and the Trashed Wings, which are smothered in their homemade sauce. I will admit that the wings were great; personally they were a bit much for my liking as I prefer a more dry rub wing instead. As far as the brisket goes I was asked if I wanted burnt ends, and of course, I said yes, and let me just say that they didn't disappoint.
One disappointment that I had thought had nothing to do with the food, service, or atmosphere instead I was to blame for not ordering the Toasted Ravioli, which was prepared with the fantastic smoked brisket burnt ends. This mouthwatering appetizer was recently featured on Food Network's "What to Eat in Missouri" list, and it just broke my heart to leave without trying them.
Overall Salt + Smoke is a solid addition to the St.Louis BBQ scene, and with two locations its now easier than ever to...
Read moreThis place has been on my list to try in St. Louis for a while and so I was really excited to come here. Of the 3 locations near me, I picked this one because it seemed like it would have the most available parking and on a Tuesday night, finding a parking spot was no issue.
Overall, we had a very good experience here. The restaurant space is cozy, but I felt like we had our space and privacy. The service was fast and friendly.
As for the food, there were some things I thought were great and some things I didn't like as much, but I wanted to try a variety of things knowing that some of them may not totally fit my personal taste preferences. The portions are generous and most of the things I didn't finish were because I was pretty full and I didn't love them enough to want to stuff myself.
The beef brisket (lean) was delicious. It was the best meat that I got and I ate all of it and would have eaten more if I had it. The ribs were good, but didn't knock my socks off. You do get a lot of ribs. The third meat I got was the fried bologna, which I was glad that I ordered to try it, but something about the jalapeño cheddar made me not want to eat all of it once I was getting full.
As for the sides, the white cheddar cracker mac was the best and I liked it more with every bite. The creamed corn, however, was good, but kind of resembled a corn chowder a little more than creamed corn and the flavor was a little off by my taste. We also got the fried chicken skins, which were good, but one order was plenty for the four of us to share. I also liked the popover.
Overall, I am very satisfied with my visit and I would encourage people considering it to come and try it. I am confident that anyone could find a meal here they would really enjoy. There are some things I would be ordering again other things I wouldn't and would try something else. Without question I rate this restaurant above a 4, but I'm not sure my visit warranted a perfect 5. But you should come and try it...

We love Salt + Smoke and have been customers for years.
We have realized that the food quality varies by location. Our personal favorite location is the original, but we also like this Hampton location (which is closer to our house).
We ordered takeout for an early dinner tonight. Food was delivered promptly and was still hot which was great. I had the pulled pork plate, and my husband had a wings plate. The hush puppies were not as good as we recalled from prior visits - they were dry and didn’t come with the butter.
Each time we go/order it feels like the prices are higher and higher. I completely understand inflation and rising costs for businesses to operate, but what we paid today feels just too high moving forward for barbecue. Delivery fees and tips removed we paid over $60 for 2 meals, a small appetizer, and dessert. The biggest disappointment was the $6 pieces of pie that were 1/2 the size of a normal piece of pie. We were honestly surprised when we saw the size of the slices. Overall, it feels pretty steep when we consider we could go sit down at a less casual restaurant for the same amount or less with the same amount of food. For casual, quick, barbecue it felt a little much for us.
Don’t get me wrong, we still enjoyed the food. We will continue to be customers in the future, but we’ll certainly keep the costs in mind when deciding where to eat and may find ourselves here less often.
When we do go inside to eat, we’ve always had great service. This location is nice and cozy. Food has always been fast. The few times we’ve ordered cocktails we’ve really enjoyed...
