Rating: 3.7 Stars This was my first time ordering from Pueblo Solis. I decided to do takeout. This was a mistake. They were highly disorganized. I was told that the food would be ready for pickup in 25 minutes; and, when I got to the restaurant 30 minutes after the order, I still waited another 25 minutes. I was pushed to the side and ignored. When I would ask if there was an update, I was given no information. When the food was finally brought out, it was placed on a table across from the bar. I asked the hostess if I could take it and was told that she would be right with me. She was not, and the waiting continued. This needs to improve and was a 3/5 star customer service experience. The food itself was good. The Guacamole was fresh, flavorful, and by far the best part of the meal! This was easily 5 stars. The Chicken Tacos were good and had a unique flavor. They were a little cold when I actually got to eat them, which confirms my suspicion that they sat in the kitchen for a while before finally being brought out to me. The refried beans were flavorful, and the Mexican rice had an interesting and unique texture and flavor. Unfortunately, the lid was not closed properly on my beans and rice container, and the beans poured out onto the Chicken Tacos container (see photo) and into the bag as I was commuting. Ultimately, the food was solid. I hope that they can fix the other issues if I ever make it back.

Really innovative options for the veggies and the pescies--err, pescatarians šŸ˜…--among us. I arrived on a Monday afternoon--it's hard to find any place open on Mondays in South City--and decided to sit on the patio, though it was arguably too cold for that. (I was warm from walking and optimistic.) Their chips are fairly good, but their salsas were the standout: salsa fresca, salsa verde, and one made from dried chilies. I ordered sopes and tamales. I had heard of but never tried sopes, but they're a great vegetarian option--just beans, cheese, and pico de gallo on a corn cake base. It comes with guac, as well. I also tried both the jalapeƱo and cheese tamales and the bean ones. The bean were plain but delicious with the salsas, which I'd hung onto so I could enjoy them with my meal. The jalapeƱo cheese ones were a revelation. Who knew vegetarian food could be this exciting? My server was Fede and he was fantastic. He checked on me many times and asked how I liked everything. I had to get a to go container, as the sopes appetizer could easily be an entree, but I'm not at all upset about having another meal or two at home!

We have been going to Pueblo Solis since they opened more than twenty-five years ago. They are a more authentic style of Mexican food and their prices are a little higher than the Tex-Mex places you find all over STL. They all have their place but when you are craving something a bit more, Pueblo Solis is your answer. The three different salsas with the freshly made chips let you know right away that this isn’t your Taco Tuesday place. The handmade Guacamole is a star in itself. As my friend would say, ā€œnothing else should be called Guacamole!ā€ A favorite is the Queso Fundido with the amazing melted cheese and incredible chorizo and house made tortillas. We also had the TexMex Enchiladas and the Mexican Enchiladas with the amazing rice and beans. Don’t forget a Top Shelf Margarita! One of the best we’ve ever had. Needless to say, we will be back!

I keep forgetting between visits why I do not eat here. There is a reason. It's the ratio of cheese to actual food, and other reasons.

There is so much cheese that it ruins anything and everything else. Obviously some menu items won't have cheese.

A couple examples start with the nachos. I literally could not pull a chip off the mound without pulling gobs and I mean gobs of cheese and peppers with it. Many pieces of the nachos were simply glued together. Some, where the cheese had petrified to the plate were not removable. The strips of chicken came off the plate dragging stuck cheese and chips and peppers. It was a battle to get anything in my mouth without going wrist deep into battle with goop and gobs of stuff, and reducing it to bite sized goop. It didn't taste good at all. The cheese was weird. Not spoiled. Just weird tasting.

The enchaladas have the length of the tube full of nothing but a good sized rope of white cheese. So the enchalada inside is 1/3 or more dense cheese and 2/3 meat. For me that's a disgusting amount of cheese. The enchalada sauce isn't bad.

The rice is like nothing I've ever seen or tasted. I continually cannot decide if the unusual nature of the rice is innovative, or just weird. Both, I suppose. And that's kinda strange for food.

The beans are possibly the most chalky tasting, dried out, boring thing on the plate. And that's a pretty low achievement. Beans can be really good. Not these beans.

Nothing about this place is charming. The outside patio is pathetic. The tables and chairs are miniature sized so they could squeeze 10 or 12 tables onto a double wide driveway that's 8 to 10 feet long. Even when I drive by all I see are people on the patio looking like suckers for having themselves forgotten what a crappy, weird restaurant this place is.

I'll go months between visits where I just forget all this. Then I eat there. Or try. And it all comes flooding back and I realize I'm here to waste $12 on another plate of weirdly conceived and prepared something that they want me to believe is mexican food. Yeah? Well, it's not. It resembles it, but its not mexican food. It's weird. And I'm calling...

This review is based on 3 visits to this location. The food is pretty good. It's flavorful and a nice portion size. The tacos have virtually no cheese. The kitchen is very stingy with the cheese. There is a covered patio for outdoor eating. The only one dinning room that is very small and extremely cramped. There are about 15 tables. On my last and final visit to this restaurant, there was a large group of about 6 adults and 4 small children. 3 of children were running up and down the only aisle in the dinning room playing and yelling while the parents ignored their actions. The table of adults behavior wasn't much better. The children kept playing directly at the edge of our table. I don't mean in front of the table. I mean literally at the table. The server came over and asked if everything was ok with our meal. I clearly said "No. These kids are at our table. Can you please ask the parents to tend to them?" He looked at the large party's table then turned back to me and smiled and laughed and walked away. The server did nothing and we had to endure a very unpeaceful meal. It's our dinner too and our request was certainly not out of line. The part that irritates me the most is the server's attitude and complete disregard for all other patrons dining enjoyment. There are MANY other mexican restaurants in the neighborhood...
