This was one of those restaurants that is close to home, but I did not know about it. It was time to try it out, so I called them for a carry out order.
My order: Burrito California with chicken Milanesa Potosina Regular Burrito with ground beef Taco with ground beef Super Nachos Chamorros de Borrego Quesadilla con Carne with chicken
The Super Nachos, Chamorros de Borrego, and Quesadilla con Carne are what I had; the rest of the order was for my brother.
There was a language barrier between myself and the man who took my order over the phone. When I placed the order, I ordered it in the same order the seven menu items are listed in this review. The Regular Burrito was mistaken for the Wet Burrito. He could not understand Chamorros de Borrego. Yes I am not fluent in Spanish; however, I even read the menu description and he still could not understand what I was saying. The Chamorros de Borrego was the only menu item with lamb shank, and he still could not get it. After about a dozen times of repeating it, he finally got it. When he asked for my name and phone number, I said my name and provided spelling followed by my phone number. When I picked up the order and looked at the receipt, my name was incorrectly spelled and my phone number had three incorrect numbers. Las Tortugas Taqueria should have better equipped employees taking orders over the phone to reduce mistakes made with food ordered and customer information.
Enough of the boring stuff and onto the food, finally! Super Nachos: I absolutely loved their nachos! It was the first container that was opened and it looked so delicious, and it was. There was a good blend and portioning of all the nachos' toppings. The jalapeño peppers and avocado were the two best flavors here. Chamorros de Borrego: It is very rare that I eat red meat like this. I figured it was time for me to break my cycle and order something like this, lamb shank. It was so incredibly juicy, and all the meat slid right off the bone. I never would have thought it would have been so satisfying. Quesadilla con Carne: This was the best quesadilla I have had to date! It was tiny, but it is a heavy hitter.
I am pretty happy that I tried Las Tortugas Taqueria out. It is one place that I would like to go to again. But next time I would...

Read moreWe’re originally from California, moved to Michigan over 4 years ago, we’ve been searching for good Mexican food since day one and have always been deeply disappointed, even with friends recommendations; and yes, we’ve eaten in Mexican Town and it’s still a let down. This place is currently 2nd best in our book as far as actual, authentic, Mexican restaurants. The seasoning is spot on, the salsas are flavorful, the Michelada and Agua de Horchata were delicious, the Birria Tacos were beyond savory, basically all the food we got was a hit. Highly recommended!
EDIT: I’ve encountered a couple of let downs in the menu such as the Flautas and Enchiladas Potosinas. Both had way overcooked chicken which made the platers so rough and tough to enjoy, and with no added flavor. Flautas are one of my favorite dishes and I was disappointed that they got it all wrong, the tacos were drowned in lettuce when they should have been drowned in sour cream, guacamole and queso cotija instead, not shredded cheese; that was a major miss. Lettuce should had then been sprinkled lightly to top off the plate, not used as the main ingredient. I haven’t ordered the Nachos but I can see they make them the same way as the Flautas so I’ll avoid those two at all costs. As a rule of thumb, Mexican food does not use shredded cheese nor ground beef so I recommend avoiding any types of plates with those ingredients regardless of the restaurant. Other than that, everything else we’ve tried...
