Hobbs — Restaurant in Swarthmore

I had a cappuccino and a scone. Coffee tasted over-roasted and stale, though the espresso was extracted well. The resulting cup was weak bodied with little depth and quite bitter with little acity. The milk was either understeamed or not whole milk, as it neither added complexity nor counterbalanced the burnt beans.

The scone was dense, bland, and demonstrated none of the characteristics of a scone. I can only think it was vegan, and if you think of it as its own treat instead of a scone it would be quite enjoyable.

The coffee was bland in flavor and seemed watered down. They only have bagel based sandwiches I believe and a few scones/coffee cakes. The atmosphere, a lot of people sitting around with books and laptops. It doesnt seem pedestrian friendly for someone just wanting a bite and drink. Speaking of which, i was there round lunchtime and the cashier was nice enough, but let the customer in front of me talk for over AFTER ordering. Not cool for those with places to see, things to do. It had a real sesame street vibe to it, as if they let a bunch of kids play "worker" for fun. If you're going for a kitchy vibe and insist upon hiring unpleasant staff with a "can't be bothered" attitude, then your product better be incredible. At Hobbs, it's not.

Living nearby, I wanted to like it here so badly (and spent plenty of money trying) - but it falls short in so many ways. The line to buy drinks is the same area/line where people wait so when it's crowded, it's awkward. The food options leave a LOT to be desired - usually some sad looking scones just sitting in a display case. The coffee is weak and stale tasting. The staff are cold and clearly wish to be anywhere but there.
