I have been in twice recently for donuts, each time around 7:00am. The first time, I took my 4 year old son with me. All I can say is RUDE! Whoever was working the counter, I didn't get her name, was incredibly rude and terribly unfriendly. Walking in, I said good morning to the lady at the counter, and told them that I wanted to purchase a half dozen. No response, just a very short "what can I get for you." I never thought that I would be so rushed to pick out donuts. My son was a little indecisive on what donuts he wanted, and it was obvious that the staff were not happy with it. Really?! He's a little boy, trying to pick out donuts. But again, it was painfully obvious that she had better things to do. After my son finally made his choices, she rang up our order. As I opened my wallet (to pull out CASH, since they still don't take credit or debit), I was immediately told "well we don't take cards." I replied "that's fine, I have cash." So I paid and left. That was visit #1.
Giving people the benefit of the doubt, and thinking that maybe she was just having a bad day, I went back this morning after coming off of shift. I drove out of my way to stop here, as there are plenty of excellent bakeries to enjoy along my drive from Joliet to Genoa. So in I went again, and wouldn't you know it, same thing! Unfriendly, rude, rushed service. I can't say it enough. RUDE, RUDE, RUDE! If I didn't have my donut selection chosen within 50 milliseconds, the woman was put-off and irritable. At least this time they didn't assume I didn't have cash, but probably because I had it out before she even rang up my order.
Long story short, we won't be going back, ever. I've told family and friends to avoid this place like the plague and chose another local bakery that offers a friendly atmosphere, patient staff, and quality products.
After looking through other online reviews of this place, I see that complaints about their unfriendly service go back over 4 years...obviously nothing has changed, nor will it change. And there never is any acknowledgement from Elleson's on any of their reviews, including Facebook. Hmm...makes me think that they really don't care about customers who come in and only spend $15-20 on donuts.
I don't care how long you've been in business, or how you're an 'icon' in the Sycamore area; if you're rude, unfriendly, and rush your customers, then perhaps you should consider a different line of work. It's beyond ridiculous, and I'm beyond frustrated. I'll stick to Latsis Bakery in Genoa and other places on my route home. At least when I go in there I am greeted with friendly people who actually value their...
Read moreElleson's is a nice little bakery to stop for a quick doughnut or fritter. It seems to be the place to go for locals and some of the 8am crowd has their regular tables. The bakery hosts several different types of doughnuts and fritters; unlike Dunkin Doughnuts, the baked goods here are made fresh daily and whatever is not sold is set aside for a discounted price the next day. The quality of Elleson's doughnuts are good, I wouldn't say they're the best (I've been spoiled by Country Doughnuts). My little cousins are in love with this place and we go often for a treat. At times service might feel slightly rushed, especially when there is another person to be served, but since I've had at least one young child with me and know that it might take a while to choose, I've simply waved other people to go before me and I haven't had rude service. The cashiers want to make sure that people aren't waiting too long. As for the attitude towards children, they seem to be very accommodating. I try to teach my little cousins social skills such as ordering for themselves and the cashiers are kind and helpful; especially when my cousins pay for their doughnuts and milk by themselves. Again, I know that they take longer time to order so I let others go before us so that the line won't be held up which seems to be a priority with the cashiers. Just so you know, Elleson's only accepts cash or check. The people who are complaining about the bakery not having debit or credit in this day and age need to realize that many small businesses cannot afford to have debit or credit because the business is charged for each transaction. Please be considerate and realize that small businesses have costs that many people don't think of. Over all its a nice place to stop for breakfast for...
Read moreWe got 4 dozen donuts well in advance for a baby sprinkle (like a shower but smaller). We ordered them in 3 different ways specifying they were all going on a donut wall and that we wanted sprinkles. The employee we placed the order with read our order back to us when we paid to make sure we were on the same page.
Day of the event, a family member picked up the donuts for us, which Elisons knew about. Not a single donut was made correctly. None had sprinkles. Half were long johns which cannot go on a donut wall. We were told we were called to confirm - we weren’t. They didn’t believe us and made us text them a photo. Lastly, we were told we needed to drive an hour+ back to them to return the 100% incorrect donuts in order to get a refund.
I’ve never experienced a food catering be 100% wrong and then the customer service be rude & unnecessarily difficult. Definitely do NOT order them for any event you have. They will be difficult and it won’t...
