BTW is a quiet little place in downtown Tavares with Burger, Tacos, and Waffles. We walked in and we were immediately greeted by Ashley. She explained the sanitary menu placement and ordering instructions to us and then took our order. She was a great hostess and even spoke loud enough to here her behind her mask. Nobody does that and are constantly asked to repeat themselves. On the way there, I figured I might try a little bit of everything, so I had three tacos for $11, poutine with tater tots, and a burger.
I had three tacos; the first one I ate being the Korean bbq bulgolgi pork, charred tomatillo, homemade ranch, and mangoes and jalapeños. The bulgolgi I was hoping for was a miss. Maybe because it was pork instead of beef bulgolgi, idk. It was more of a shredded meat taco with Asian flavors. It was delicious, just not what I was expecting.
The second taco was a Hot Chik-n bed which was fried chicken, Buffalo wing sauce, blue cheese crumbles, a carrot slaw, ranch and scallions. You know when you have a normal meal on your plate and you take a bite of each thing at once and it should be balanced? This hit that mark so amazingly well. It was like a Buffalo wing dipped in blue cheese with carrots all at once. It was a balanced blend of magic in my mouth. I could have ate 20 of them.
The third taco was called the "trailer park" which contained sweet bbq chicken crack, cabbage, homemade ranch and cilantro. O.M.G.!!! I'm not sure what chicken crack is, but, I know this taco smacked it up and rubbed itself down in my mouth with every bite. It was absolutely delicious!!! The bbq sauce and the chicken with the ranch and cabbage. There might have been crack in it! I was hooked!
The poutine was by far the best I have had anywhere in FL. Poutine is usually gravy over French fries with cheese curds. BTW elevates Poutine to a whole new level with short rib gravy over tater tots(fries are available) and cheese curds. There was some seasoning on there to but it was to light to make out over the delicious short rib gravy. It was so hearty, like when you are eating a good bowl of stew and your are spooning through it to find the meat. This tasted like there was meat in the gravy. There wasn't but the taste was so meaty and hearty that I kept looking for a piece of short rib. I told Ashley, who also doubled as our waitress with the awesome support of Darcy, that I was tempted to lick the paper in the tray to get all the gravy. She supported it, but, I declined to make such a mess.
Ashely and Darcy constantly and consistently checked on our table to make sure we had everything we needed. They were on point with it not hovering like a waitress at an Asian buffet. They were very polite and courtesy throughout our entire dining experience. Made you feel at home.
Now, not to take away from any of the deliciousness I ate leading up to the burger, but this burger was off da chain!!! The Southerner had pimento cheese, honey mustard slaw, stout beer and sriracha bbq. To start off, pimento cheese belongs on every burger from now on. It added a whole new texture to the burger that was just astounding. I absolutely loved this burger and the amazing flavor profile. The stout really brings out the beefy flavor in the burger, but also brings that flavor out of every element of the burger. I cant stop thinking of that texture that was going crazy in my mouth, it was delicious, absolutely delicious. Im still full hours later, but can't wait to return to try out some of the other items on the menu and of course some of my fav's from this trip.
We finished the meal with deep fried oreos. I think they were better than the one at the county fair!!! Just sayin!!!
This place was way more than burgers,...
Read moreFirst time visitors to this restaurant. I heard about it from a barber that I reviewed elsewhere. Burgers tacos and waffles. They said it came from three different food trucks combining for a business. We showed up at opening on Saturday which was noon, and within 10 minutes eight of the 11 tables were full. We ordered the bad mother chugar, and their mega Mac Burger. And loaded fries. The barbecue on the chicken was not what we understood or expected, and that was our mistake. It was truly very spicy. It also had a weird consistency to us, not that they did something wrong, but it was very unexpected almost like a dry rub on a fried chicken. I had it later, as leftovers and it was actually really good but still spicy. The burger was great the not your nacho fries was enough for both of us actually. If we want it to be penny Pinchers we could have shared those alone. I am not a fan of the soft drinks that they served. They had some unbranded drinks and there was only one diet option, and it was really flavorless and bland and almost flat. And at $3.50 per soda I was not a happy camper on that. I give them a full five stars because they are niche and they try and their service was great their people were attentive but they still want you to stand up and pay at the counter and order at the counter, but then ask for tips at the counter before you eat and before you even see the service. As for drinks, there must be something with a liquor license because they handed you a drink menu but you had to physically walk outside the front door and into the concoctions place next door... That were actually connected inside to be able to order something like a margarita. It was very strange and unexpected and I didn't want to have to pay two different places to do a meal and drinks. So if they can work that out it'll be an added plus to the location. They are situated if you're sitting outside you might be able to see the seaplanes coming in and out from the seaplane rides. All in all a good experience I'm happy I am going to go back and try it again until we find a what exactly is our flavor. But the burger was great I'll give it that The burger was truly great and my wife was very jealous that she ordered a chicken that was too spicy for her and my burger was tasty...
Read moreAfter having lived near Tavares for nearly two years now, I decided to finally check out BTW for dinner.
The interior was very well maintained and smelled pleasant. After reviewing the overwhelming amount of options on the menu, I decided to try three tacos: The Shroom, WTF, and KBQ. Staff were exceptionally upbeat, friendly, and helpful.
The wait time for the food was quite long. Once the tacos finally arrived at my table, I was terribly disappointed. Let it be known that I am absolutely not a picky eater; I love flavor and have had the same type of tacos at various other taco establishments.
The Shroom (mushroom) taco had a flavor I can only describe as extremely earthy, with notes of soil. If you want to taste the forest floor, this is it.
The WTF (blackened fish) taco was absolutely smothered in a spicy Baja sauce to the point that all other ingredients became moot. If the sauce were applied more sparingly, so that the other flavors could shine through, I think this would have been a winner. It’s extra disappointing considering this taco incurs an extra charge for the fish, which I couldn’t taste.
Finally, the KBQ (Korean bbq, except pork instead of beef) was the biggest disappointment by far. I love Korean bulgogi beef. This pork taco at BTW, however, had a distinct flavor that instantly transported me to a public restroom. Think Walmart, maybe Goodwill. If you could encapsulate that scent as a flavor, you’d have the KBQ. As I struggled through my one and only bite, the emotions displayed across my face intrigued my dining partner to try the taco. I didn’t tell them what it tasted like to me, as not to taint their palette. They tried a bite and spat it out into a napkin after two chews, exclaiming they were oddly reminded of a urinal cake. Ok, so I was onto something here!
Flavor is subjective and there are probably many individuals out there who will enjoy these same three tacos. Unfortunately, they were all misses for me. I can absolutely recommend BTW for food variety, creativity, being clean and well maintained, and the very excellent...
