Was there for a dine-in dinner on a Thursday night with two other companions. I selected this place because of its good reviews, location, and the availability to eat in (something not that common for Chinese restaurants in the Tampa Bay Area, for some reason).
The place is a very simply appointed restaurant - plain tables and chairs, not much decor. It seems to be mainly geared towards a takeout business. There was one young person manning the counter in the rear and everyone else was in the kitchen area. We were quickly provided with menus and water-filled glasses. Soon afterwards an older gentleman came out from the kitchen to take our order.
I ordered one of their combo meals (honey chicken, pork fried rice, and egg roll). I asked for them to hold the honey since I really just wanted the fried, breaded chicken chunks. That request seemed to confuse the gentleman who suggested the sweet and sour chicken combo until I explained exactly what I wanted - plain chicken.
We were not provided a bowl of complimentary fried noodles which I’m always used to receiving at a sit down Chinese restaurant. Not a big deal but out of character to what I’m used to in other places. My two companions ordered different versions of the fried rice as a meal (not a combo).
The food eventually arrived - it took a little while but it seems they were busy with some takeout orders. My dish had a fair amount of chicken and a smallish portion of fried rice but no egg roll (usually Chinese food servings are very generous). I waited a few minutes in case the egg roll was delayed but nothing. When I asked the older gentleman who had taken our order and brought out the food about it, he simply responded: “Oh, you wanted the egg roll too?” I was incredulous. It’s one part of the three part combo meal advertised. Why would I have to ask for it as an extra item? He quickly brought me the ‘forgotten’ egg roll.
The egg roll was what you would expect - the regular frozen type which is fried to order. However, the chicken was exceptional. It was lightly breaded and expertly fried with plump and moist steamy centers of chicken breast. On the other hand, the pork fried rice seemed old and had an off-putting taste. I couldn’t place my finger on what the strange taste was but I had to add a generous amount of soy sauce to disguise the odd flavor. One of my dining companions had the same reaction to his fried rice. My other companion - who had the chicken fried rice - didn’t render an opinion. Maybe his was prepared fresh.
The service was attentive and the decor rather pedestrian. The prices were a bit high compared to other similar restaurants and for the portions served. My real disappointment was the quality of the food (other than the chicken). It’s hard to mess up fried rice at a Chinese restaurant. This dish is probably one of the most standard at these establishments so how can you go so wrong?
I’m 65 years old and have eaten at dozens of Chinese restaurants all over and this is hands down the worst fried rice I have ever been served. The are quite a few other Chinese restaurants in that stretch of Fowler by USF. They need to get their act together if they hope to be competitive. Unfortunately, if I do come back it will only be for the...
Read moreHonestly this place is by far the best Chinese restaurant my wife and I have ate in a very long time and we are from New York. We had to try these chicken wings with white rice and another order with pork fried rice, also Wonton Soup and chicken noodle soup. Very tasty, the Chicken are great sizes and crispy and the meat falls off. The soups were phenomenal, I’m very thingy about my wonton soup and my wife as well haha.
The sweet tea is BOMB! I had to get it, the owner noticed I had to much bags to carry to my car that she infact helped me to my vehicle…honestly the best gesture anyone has ever done. I have never seen that or experienced that so for that I had to do this review. The fact the owner walks out to help you patiently is very heart warming and I was truly thankful because I would have spilled the sweet tea! Thank you Kind lady! I will forever return to this location when I am in the area. As I’m writing this I’m getting my next order now haha got like 7min left to receive my food. (chicken wings white rice and beef with broccoli white rice.
Thank you for your service thank you for your amazing great quality food! I would have shared pictures but we devoured...
Read moreOur usual place closer to us was closed so I let google maps pick the 2nd closest and it did not disappoint.
I only put in two orders of crab rangoons to go and asked if they were savory or slightly sweet. It was so cute when the daughter said it’s cream cheese…as are all of them (typically).
As a family, we look for crust quality and crunch as well as balance of flavor with sweet sauce. These are a solid 9.5/10. The crust is thick, smooth, and extra crispy on the edge. The flavor is savory. Improvement suggestion would be actual chives over onion pwdr and some more crab. It could be they just use a high end blender.
The place has great quality chairs, we favor dark woods, and they appeared polished. I really liked the wood/mock wood rectangular paneling. Improvement suggestion would be an update to curtains and decorations to make it more welcoming/modern.
Apologies, no photos, we ate them before we decided to review....
