Island Spice — Restaurant in Texas

I went to This place for just a side of rice and peas and jerk sauce. Upon arrival I walked in where the bartender/server did in fact greet me the owner or manager was sitting off the to the side at a table I will tell you at the end how I know this . So, the bartender asked if I needed a menu I said no since I knew what I wanted. I stated I needed a side of beans and rice how do y’all sell it ? Does it come small medium large or one size? She said one size I asked how big she made shape with her hand which was hard to equate so I asked can 2-3 people share one said instantly replied no they will all need their own . I Also asked for side of jerk sauce with the rice she insisted I would get a generous amount don’t worry about it because I wanted it for dipping sauce back home So I trusted her instinct and when she rung me up my total was 18 dollars I was worried because for that price these sides have to big amount which means I’m buying way more than I need but she didn’t care to show me the container it came in or or tell me the price prior to purchase so while I wait on my food of 3 sides of rice and peas which took over 30 minutes her and another server got into a altercation about tip share making a scene while my food comes out and it is big containers filled with rice as you can see in the pic tire minis one we ate last night I instantly see it and become frustrated because this is way to much then the sauce I was given was 2 oz so I asked for more and not even complain about the portion size and price I take my loss on top of giving her the tip of the change at this point I’m just ready to go so I continue wait on this extra sauce the lady who was sitting the table when I walked in to the side goes in the back and come back and calls the girls to the. Back about the altercation at this time I’m standing up very upset about the lack of acknowledgement I was given and money I spent so I had to get the manager slash owner attention about the sauce I was waiting on when she went to the back I seen my sauce sitting the table where the initial bartering who helped me pointed it out to the Manager to give me so instead of her taking care of customer first she was gone have me waiting out front for who knows how long for my sauce that still was another small 2 oz cup no sorry for my time or anything ontoo it was it busy I was only customer purchased food beside 3 people at the bar who were...

I see that people are still complaining about the same old man. I was at this restaurant years ago and watched that old man get into it with a smaller guy for no reason. The guy was asking him something about a takeout order and the old man was just being rude. The small white guy was being polite at first when asking for the food. But the old man continued to be rude and arrogant. Finally the guy asked him. Why are you being rude to me? The old man told the guy to leave. So the guy said ok turned around and started walking towards the door but the old man was following him. The guy turned around and said hey man there's no need to follow me. I'm leaving, the food isn't even for me it's for a friend. When they got by the door (old man continued to follow behind by about two feet all the way to the door) as the guy went to open the door the old man put his hand on his back. The white guy turned around and said Hey, man, don't put your hands-on me. I'll mess you up, the old man then proceeded to say you don't know who I am ill mess you up. The white guy says ok have a nice day, then turns begins to open the door and the old man pushed straight pushed him out the door for no reason as hard as he could. As that boy got pushed from behind he turned into a straight savage turned around threw a leg kick followed by a right and a left. When I say that old man went flying I mean he went flying like he had 2 tickets to Mars for life. That old man hit a table with his feet higher than his body then hit the floor, then looked up confused as all could be trying to figure out what just happened in a matter of 2 seconds at most. As the white boy stood over the old man and looked down at him, the old man wiped his face and spit up more blood than a leaking faucet and what looked to be teeth. That white boy just looked at him said I told you don't put your hands on me and I tried multiple times to leave peacefully but you couldn't do that. Have a nice day and then walked out that door. I'll never forget this, it was absolutely hilarious. I got to watch a real life Chappelle Show skit "When keeping it real goes wrong". Okay before I say anything . If you are from the southwest side and are used to Cool Runnings they have completely different styles so don't expect to get that type of Jamaican flavor here ! Island Spice is in their own lane so they must be treated as such.

So I just moved into the area and really like Jamaican food so I was excited to see one so close by. First of all it's legit a real bar. More of a bar vibe then a restaurant which is cool. I was greeted by the bartender and he was super friendly. Tello g me about their specials and live band and Kareoke at night .

The atmosphere was pretty dark even though it was day time. You can tell most people take their food to go in the day time , and I was advised to call in next time so I didn't have to wait. Which I plan to do , but the wait was not long at all.

Food: the food was delicious ! I loooooovvvveeee plantains and they were the exact type of ripeness for frying . The only complaint I could say was I wanted more lol. The oxtail was fall off the bone. Idk when the other reviews were talking about because my oxtail was fool of flavor and extremely soft and well seasoned. Plus they were very meaty so it was a lot to eat worth the coins . Now the rice and peas are different then what I'm used to. I'm used to like more of a dry texture but their rice and peas definitely has the sauce of the oxtail poured over it . It wasn't bad just different for me. Although I liked the sauce it was very different flavor then what I'm used to again not a bad thing but for those used to cool runnings it is not the same ! I liked the sauce so I was good. All in all a good experience . I plan to stop by one day for their late night events and dine...
