The only thing that Nolan F. (our server) knew about Sumo Sushi, was what time they closed. From start to finish you could tell he didn't want us in there. Very poor service and the food matched that. We found out that any modification you make is a $2 upcharge, regardless of allergies. That's $2 for every item changed...
My wife got the Yakisoba Noodles which were obviously whipped up by "Chef Mike" (microwave), and were still piping hot, puking steam from the center when we received a box 15 minutes later. Very odd recipie for Yakisoba as well. Noodles were chewy and tough to eat. My wife side they were like chewing cardboard and they were crunchy on edges of the plate, another sign of a microwave. We asked for a box to be courteous and paid for our meal, but threw it away in the Domino's Pizza trash can next door when we got a pizza after the inedible food at Sumo. Very odd experience to say the least. Before we asked for a box, a different waitress essentially asked us to pay up and leave. She had blonde hair. Said the time was 9:04 and that we had to leave as the store closed at 9. We had only had our meals for about 10 minutes at this time.
We could actually see them using the microwave from where they us sat in the corner. The individual cooking was visible through the food window. I understand it was an hour until closing, but just because you were slow all night and started cleaning early and didn't want to dirty a pan, doesn't mean you serve old food thats been sitting out all night, and then reheat it in a microwave. I'd highly recommend every person to avoid this place at all costs. Your money and time will be respected elsewhere, well better than it will be here.
Personally, I have been a restaurant manager myself for a long time, and never had such a disheartening, bad experience in such a short amount of time. Prices aren't bad (if you don't modify anything), but that's about it. The staff is obviously not trained, did not know the menu, and respect for customers was lacking at every turn. No respect for customer allergies. Felt like we were blamed for having no control over an allergy. If either of these two wait staff members ever worked in one of my restaurants, I would have fired them on the spot for the way they treated us. Then the food was just subpar. Not worth even the low, unmodified cost. You can pay a lot less to use a microwave elsewhere. You will defintely feel judged here as thats how we felt the whole time. We eat out a lot and to be honest we haven't felt like that ever. You could tell Nolan F. and the other waitress were talking about me and my wife as they kept laughing and looking over at us every few moments. We were the only customers in the restaurant. As a restaurant manager, I know first hand not to take any judging to heart from the wait staff, but it was really poor disgusting behavior from these two very...
Read moreI ordered takeout online. Chicken teriyaki plate and chicken teriyaki sumo box. Overall, not happy.
Chicken teriyaki plate: the fried rice was okay but only had a little flavor. Large portion of chicken, but it was crunchy but not overcooked; it was that cheap woody chicken. Very few vegetables. The broccoli was good but the carrots and onions were crunchy (undercooked). The miso soup was barely warm and a little weird, I'm not sure if it was seaweed or what that was in it. I received 2 mounds of fried rice, literally half of the box. For $16 I was expecting much less rice and much more vegetables.
The sumo box: the chicken was not raw but obviously undercooked. The vegetables and rice, not impressive. But the sushi portion was good. My wife liked the tempura and dumplings and California roll.
We were not happy that the sushi was packaged with the hot food. The sushi was even packaged in the same to go container as the fried rice and chicken teriyaki. There was no way to add notes when ordering online to even ask to pack the COLD separate from the HOT.
We might try the sushi again, but obviously not getting the teriyaki food again. More likely to not even bother with this...
Read moreI have been eating at Sumo Sushi for years, since the restaurant opened and was originally owned by two brothers.
There have been times that the food was amazing and times it could have been better. This being said, I have never sent anything back returning faithfully almost weekly spending as much as $150 each weekend as well as occasionally ordering on doordash.
Tonight was the first time I have ever returned a dish. The dish was ordered spicy, but was so spicy it was inedible. We requested a replacement dish and sent the order back to the kitchen. As such, you can imagine my surprise when I was charged for the dish that was sent back. After requesting the item be removed, the owner/manager, John refused to issue a credit despite knowing I was a regular customer and the kind of money I spend in his establishment on a regular basis.
I am a huge advocate of supporting local businesses and that will not change. However, I will not be returning to this merchant as he would rather allow a loyal customer walk away and give up 150/weekly than issue a 12.95 credit for something that...
