I find myself stopping by for the warm welcome feeling that is felt as soon as I walk through the door.
This place is simultaneously legendary AND the best kept secret, and the realness of Sunrise can be found by those who have the right kind of eyes -- a staple of the area and a favorite watering hole for regulars and a nice surprise for new patrons.
Besides the fantastically mixed drinks by a bar keeper that is just the best in all measurable human categories -- there are also pool tables, dart boards, mega Jenga, a shuffleboard table and weekly karaoke -- also a cozy, semi secluded patio section for fresh air, even though the air filtration inside the bar is good enough to keep the 'grandfathered-in smoking allowed in doors' a feature that is rare these days.
... and you can bring your own food or order delivery, even though the owner of Sunrise will have a delicious spread laid out from time to time.

Read moreFor a rapidly growing area with pedestrian architecture and countless strip storefronts that blur together, this bar is quite the dive. And that’s a compliment. Cheers may be where everybody knows your name, but Sunrise is where Lisa knows your name and your drink AND gives you a hug.
No two trips here are the same. Always an adventure. The staff, led by owner Jeanne, are as welcoming as a Mayberry Chamber of Commerce, as tolerant of regulars as family, and are happy to help strangers in a time of curiosity and need. They never shirk a task and are splendid in all weathers.

Read moreI'm a nurse. My patient died of cancer today. It was a long hard shift, but I fought for both the the dying patient and her beloved husband. I stopped at Sunrise a well deserved beer on the way home. They refused me service, saying that I was already drunk, though with my eyes red from crying (and having explained the situation), they refused me service. I was told that they are from New York, where they don't take no silliness or sob stories like mine. Though I was in the bar less than 10 minutes, my clothes smelled like cigarettes. Won't be back....
