House of Fortune is one of those local gems where the usual Chinese food dishes are inoffensive and just like other local restaurants, but the house specials are a step above and what you should focus on!
After eating here at least once a month for the last couple of years, here are the stand-out dishes:
The flaming wok basil chicken is so flavorful between the velveted, grilled chicken (or shrimp, as I sometimes upcharge to), the spices, and the Thai basil! This stir fry is my go-to when I want something that will be great everytime.
Thai fried rice is like your usual house special fried rice, containing at least three kinds of meats (I believe it's four in this case: chicken, beef, pork, and shrimp), with the addition of Thai spices and a little something else in the cooking sauces...I assume its fish sauce, since there's a lot more umami/savoryness compared to most fried rices. Be forewarned that there's still a decent bit of oil, if that's a turn off for you. Regardless of that, it's the best fried rice I've had in the area.
I tried orange chicken the other day just to see what a more Americanized dish was like, and holy moly it's the best orange chicken I've ever had...although I don't order it often, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. Regardless, the sauce actually had strong citrus notes, and the spice of the chiles really came through! The dried orange slices were a nice...
Read moreSeriously don’t know how this place is ranked so well. I’ll start by saying that this is the first time I’ve ever taken food back to a restaurant in my life. I ordered the general tso dinner “special” for $7.95. I get home and open the takeout box, and see there is only 5 prices of chicken. Not exaggerating I counted them, 5 pieces of chicken ranging from quarter to half dollar size. It also came with half a scoop of rice. I called and explained that I only got 5 pieces of chicken. The lady on the phone said “oh really, you should have gotten 7” like that was supposed to be better. So, they’re expecting people to pay over $1 for each little piece of chicken? Not me. I took it back and got my money back. Will never return either. Seriously, I read a couple other reviews saying there was only like 5 pieces of chicken and thought they were exaggerating. Guess I should have listened. If you read this, don’t believe me, and still decide to go there, go ahead and order the dinner special and see for yourself. Just check it before you drive all the way home because I Guarantee you’ll feel ripped...
Read moreAwful.. Staff was rude, food was cold, bourbon chicken tasted like watered down tofu, sesame chicken was spongy, egg rolls were the worst I've ever had!! When we called to inform them of the problems with our meals, staff was even WORSE.. never asked if we wanted replacements or even an apology. We returned the inedible food and the woman asked me what was wrong with it, I attempted to explain but she walked away, brought the cash back and all but threw it in my face before walking away... We haven't eaten out a lot since the pandemic began but we do like to support our local small businesses when we can...you would think, especially with so many restaurants closing right now, that they would go the extra mile to provide a good meal for people. Shame on them!!! We will NEVER go there again and we will let our friends and family know to steer clear of this place if they expect food fit for human...
