What a fantastic little diner, my family and I were traveling through this area on our way back from vacation. We stopped to refuel and it was recommended to us by the sales clerk. We were greeted by very friendly wait staff. Our waitress made many suggestions of different menu items that were top sellers. Not sure if we were wanting breakfast or lunch, it became very difficult to choose with such a large variety! The Broasted Chicken was my choice with corn fritters that were amazing and homemade cucumber salad. The chicken was phenomenal. My wife chose the Chesapeake Burger and the salad bar. Both of which she enjoyed immensely. The salad bar had such a large range of items and many different salads to choose from. Her burger was cooked to perfection and smothered in homemade crab dip! Our daughter decided to have the Philly Steak and Cheese Flatbread with a side of onion rings. The portion was huge and the onion rings were batter dipt and delicious! Although we were stuffed to the gill we could not surpass the homemade desserts that were offered. We chose a piece of the coconut cream pie to share and it was scrumptious. As we were enjoying our meal a middle aged women came from the back of the kitchen (not sure if maybe it was the owner) to retrieve a drink from the cooler. She spoke to almost every customer greeting them with a friendly smile, hug, or conversation. The food was excellent, the server was very attentive, and the down home country atmosphere was...
Read moreI had fond memories of post-hike ice cream here (Catoctin Mountain Park is nearby), so I dragged the GF here to try dinner. A mistake...
While I realize the place is value-priced for sit-down, dinner was still a culinary miss.
Hit: Corn fritters are much better than I expected, kind of like a cross between fries and beignets (complete with powdered sugar). Good texture and flavor.
Miss: Turkey open-faced (dinner). There's a lot of heavy gravy, and a lot of breading. I'm not sure I tasted any turkey at all.
Miss: Mashed potato sides taste like instant with near zero flavor. Needs hot sauce or pepper or horseradish or ...
Miss: Ribeye steak is adequate for the price, but completely unseasoned (tasted like no salt, no pepper). If they offer you steak sauce, accept the offer.
Hit: Blackberry milkshake was decent.
The location off Thurmont's main street is charming, and even on a quiet evening, there was a few regulars whom the staff knew by name. The place has character, and I like supporting local restaurants. But the cuisine here would have been lacking in a 1970s diner.
All in all, it's pretty cheap-- so this is a case of "you get what you pay for". But I suggest going just for dessert (which is good). If you insist on dinner, remember to ask...
Read moreMy sister and I decided to drive up to Thurmont from Frederick to Kountry Kitchen because we heard it was good. Either we happened to be there on a bad day, or the people who said it was good don't know good food. The server was friendly, but she told us "Try to hurry because I don't want the cook to get mad at me if you order breakfast after they switch to lunch." Even though they say that they serve pancakes all day, and eggs are on the lunch/dinner menu too. I ordered cream of crab soup and a side salad. I was told I could take one trip to the salad bar. The salad bar was pretty good. But we could hear the server and the cook arguing about how much to charge me for my salad. She brought my soup to me and it looked like someone emptied a can of cream of chicken soup into a bowl right from the can. I'm almost sure it was cream of chicken soup - I didn't taste a hint of crab in it. I couldn't even finish it. My sister's meal was pretty good - 2 fried eggs, hash browns (looked like they cooked a frozen patty), and fresh sausage which she said was good. My meal - side salad and a bowl of canned soup - with tax and tip was $17. I didn't want to say anything because I didn't want the cook to come out and get mad at ME! I will never go to this...
