Definitely one of the most uncomfortable restaurant experiences I’ve ever had. Everything had been going well until the entrees came out. Out of the 5 of us who dined only two of us enjoyed the entree. While three of us did not enjoy the meal, we just wanted the bill to come out so we could leave. After waiting a while for the server to even come back to our table we finally got her attention and requested the bill. When she asked if we wanted take out boxes for the left over food, the 3 of us who did not enjoy the food simply responded with no thank you. The waitress went on to ask “why?” And we simply replied with we were just not feeling it, and she continued to ask what was wrong with the food. After responding she said okay, and asked if we wanted to do anything about it and we said no we were okay. She then asked if we wanted to see a manager and we said no, we were okay. She still brought the manager over anyway and the manager slammed the plate a ramen one of us had order back on the table and interrogated her as to why she didn’t like it. After responding truthfully after repeated questioning she was met with an attitude by the manager. It was only then that she requested it be removed as she had only taken one bite. The bills were finally brought out and while we did not feel comfortable at this point we intended to leave a tip. I personally paid with cash for my bill expecting she would take the bills and make change so I could leave the remaining tip. At the table she opened the bill, counted the cash, and asked me “are you all set?”, and I was caught off guard because a server has never opened my bill at the table before. She seemed to believe we were not going to tip at all. And I said you can make the change and I will leave the tip out of the change. By the end of this entire meal we felt really uncomfortable that a scene was made when we did not ask for any extra accommodation or to see the manager, but we still tipped (definitely not as much as we planned to).
I never make reviews but after leaving the restaurant I thought it was necessary. I would honestly leave 0 stars if I could. Based on the other reviews, there seems to be a common problem between the color of your skin and the type of service you receive (we were a group of young black women). Very disappointing as we were excited to try...
Read moreI've heard good things about Mikado but hadn't tried it until just this past week. There aren't too many options on a Monday night off-season in Vineyard Haven so we were happy to find that Mikado does a great job with their sushi.
I didn't take pictures as their take-out plating isn't show-stopping but I will say I liked the containers they use.
We ordered the Shrimp Shumai and Pork Gyoza appetizers. While my dinner companion didn't care for the Shumai much, I thought both were good.
The sushi rolls we ordered were the Spicy Tuna (chopped tuna mixed with tempura flakes, tobiko, scallions and spicy mayo $9), Spicy Shrimp (chopped steamed ginger shrimp w/ tempura flakes, tobiko, scallions, and spicy mayo $9), Alaska (salmon, avocado, and cucumber $9), and Golden (shrimp tempura & avocado, w/ sliced mango on top and mango sauce $18).
The Spicy Tuna was different than most as they do chop it all up so it's more of a mash; it didn't taste any less flavorful but it is a different-looking presentation and taste experience.
The Spicy Shrimp sounded interesting since it's steamed shrimp with ginger. I expected a bigger ginger flavor but was able to add a bit of marinated ginger to give it that extra kick I was hoping for.
The Alaska roll was good...nothing special but it didn't fall short of my expectation.
The Golden roll is something we always look for on a menu: a roll with mango. This one did not disappoint. The shrimp tempura was spot on and the was mango ripe and fresh. If I had to come up with something negative to say about this roll would be that it's a bit slippery with the mango making it a bit hard/messy to eat. That's hardly a shortcoming though!
If you read through the reviews, you'll some weren't happy with their meal or their experience. I don't understand those as we were quite happy with our take out and will be ordering from...

The service at Mikado was truly outstanding. The staff was attentive, courteous, and entertained conversation, I sat in the bar area, which made the dining experience even more enjoyable. They were prompt in taking orders and ensured that everything was to my satisfaction.
One of the highlights for me was the soothing background music that enhanced the overall ambiance. It created a relaxing atmosphere, allowing me to savor my meal in a peaceful setting.
I opted for the floral green tea, and I must say, the flavor is delightful! The tea had a subtle, yet distinct, floral note that complemented the meal perfectly.
As for the main course, I chose the Kung Pao chicken, and it didn't disappoint! The dish was expertly prepared, with the perfect balance of spicy and savory flavors. The chicken was tender, and the accompanying vegetables were fresh and crisp, showcasing the chef's skill and attention to quality ingredients.
Overall, my visit to Mikado was a memorable one, thanks to its excellent service from Cindy, pristine environment, inviting ambiance, and delicious offerings. I would highly recommend this restaurant to future visitors seeking a top-notch...
