A Must-Visit Gem: La Catrina of Westchester
If you’re looking for a restaurant that delivers not just a meal but an experience, look no further than La Catrina of Westchester in Croton. At the heart of this exciting new chapter is Chef Edgar, a chef whose dedication to his craft is evident in every dish he creates.
Before setting out on his own, Chef Edgar was the executive chef at X2O, one of the region’s top fine-dining establishments. But like any true artist, he had a vision of creating something of his own. In 2020—during one of the most challenging times to start a business—he and his wife, Norma, took a leap of faith and opened Coco Taco in Sleepy Hollow. Their dedication, hard work, and undeniable talent quickly made it a local favorite, leading to the opening of a second location on Lake Ave in Yonkers. Now, they’ve expanded their reach once again with La Catrina of Westchester, bringing their signature blend of bold flavors and high-quality ingredients to Croton.
The moment you step inside, you can’t help but smile. The bright, bold décor sets the stage for a dining experience that is just as lively as it is delicious. The menu is a testament to Chef Edgar’s expertise, combining fresh, vibrant ingredients with masterful techniques that elevate traditional Mexican cuisine. Every bite bursts with rich, authentic flavors, from the perfectly seasoned tacos to the house-made salsas that pack just the right amount of heat.
And whatever you do, don’t leave without trying the mole. Deep, complex, and velvety smooth, it wraps around you like a long, comforting hug from Abuelita—warm, familiar, and made with love. You won’t regret it.
What truly sets La Catrina apart is the passion and heart behind every dish. You’re not just eating food—you’re experiencing the dream of a chef who has worked tirelessly to bring people together through his craft. Whether you’re a longtime fan of Chef Edgar’s cooking or discovering it for the first time, one thing is certain: this is a place you’ll want to come back to again and again.
So, if you’re in the area, do yourself a favor and stop by. Expect incredible food, warm hospitality, and an atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. La Catrina of Westchester is more than a restaurant—it’s a celebration of perseverance, passion, and...
Read moreWe first started getting take-out from La Catrina as the Omicron variant was surging. First point: Food is excellent. Fresh ingredients, and expertly prepared standard dishes. The mole entree is flavorful and authentic; the burritos, tacos, and quesadillas are all very, very good for what they are - easy and familiar while being completely delicious and creative in the best possible way. Our occasional Mexican take-out spot soon became a Friday-night mainstay as they always had our delicious, travel-friendly food ready on time (almost always 20 minutes, no matter how busy they were). Owner/proprietor was always friendly and appreciative, and the one time we were missing an item, she genuinely apologized and made it right for us, and comped us a delicious desert. We recently went in to the dining room for dinner, anxious to see how the service and ambiance was, and can honestly say we were not disappointed. The space is lively and comfortable, the service was excellent, and the drinks large and delicious. The drinks are expensive, but not completely out of line for Westchester, and they were as delicious as they were creative. We are thrilled this is part of Croton's little dining scene, and anticipate enjoying their delicious meals on Friday nights for many...
Read moreTried this place for the first time on January 23rd 2022. Sampled Quesadillas, Al pastor tacos and molcajete catrina.
The Al pastor tacos were superb. Yes they are expensive. Welcome to Westchester. Taxes aren’t cheap and neither are food prices. If I were in Mexico it would be a different story.
Molcajete Dinner was also good. Shrimp, steak and chicken were seasoned well. This being the flagship dinner for two, I would have expected more meat. I could have easily finished it myself. Any male that exerted any form of exercise could easily have polished off the whole meal. Flavor wise. Good stuff.
The quesadillas… I got these for the kids. Appearance wise, not that appealing. They were undercooked, could of used 1 or 2 more minutes on the flattop. I tasted one, no flavor, queso cheese was bland, could of been thicker. It was 12 dollars…. Could have easily made these at home. Accompanying guacamole could have used some salt and maybe red onions or pineapple. Bland as well.
Overall food was decent....
