so I used to love the tavern & i’d bring my family here every time they visited but i had an awful experience. in march my friends & i went to dinner at the tavern. i called earlier that day & explained i had a semi large party coming through & they said that i should have no problem being seated but they don’t take reservations. when my friends came they gave them a name & we waited. i did not mention that they said we would have no problem being sat because they said that we would be seated in 15-20 mins. after almost 40 minutes of waiting i asked the hostess what was going on & she said she was sorry & that they were putting tables together for us now. more time passed and i asked again & they got someone to speak with me. i explained that i called earlier and that they said i’d have no problem being sat & he said that they don’t take reservations which i understood but they also said we’d only have to wait 15-20 mins as they sat table after table before us. they finally sat us at a table all the way in the back complaining that they had to push a family out so we could sit but honestly i didn’t care because they lied to us about putting a table together earlier. the guy i spoke to before comes up to my table yelling at me saying how when i called i said a different time & that this was all my fault for screwing my friends over & that this was not “their bad”. he even brought the phone over to me. i explained to him how they still made us wait almost an hour & he said that they were not at fault even though they lied about having a table ready. i can’t complain about the food here but the service was absolutely horrendous & maybe it was just a bad night but i would never disrespect a customer like they did especially in front of 7 other paying customers. i will...
Read moreCan't say enough good things about this place- portions are generous, food is delicious!
The coconut fried shrimp was excellent- many places fail to make it as well as Village Tavern does. Their flavor was perfect, but, the dipping sauce added just enough of a kick to make them even better.
Wings were not bad at all, although I am biased because I worked at a bar that made the best wings ever. The bleu cheese had a unique taste that I thoroughly enjoyed because it didn't seem to be something that you would get in a grocery store.
Fried cheese curds. I just wish more restaurants would serve them.
There are many more items on the menu that I would like to try including wraps and burgers, so I will definitely return.
As for atmosphere, it's a very comfortable and clean place. Well worn, it makes you feel right at home as soon as you walk in the door. Beautiful woodwork and nifty features like a "hidden" booth, with enough TV's for you to keep an eye on your favorite sports scores or games.
Booze? I didn't get to try any, but it appeared that they have a huge selection of anything brewed or distilled- if you can't find a bottled beer or draft in this place, you should probably go back a second time and keep browsing the drink menu.
Didn't have to wait for a table, though it was peak dinner time, and it didn't take long for the food to be delivered.
Wait staff was excellent. Didn't have to ask for...
Read moreGood service. Great burger, blue cheese&bacon. Ordered it medium. Was perfectly pink where it should be, notably juicy but not greasy. Had a charcoal essence as if grilled outdoors. Very nice.
Huge beer menu but several we wanted had "just tapped out. ..." Personally, I always find these "happenings" to be less "just happened," than an establishment's way of "thinning" the menu without having to change it. Given the great number of offerings and being located in a NOT so large city, my suspicion is that hard knock lessons have taught to keep on hand what sells well, let run out what doesn't and push the next on the list that needs to "run out." I say that because each time the waitress came back to tell us the "beer had left the building," a perfect replacement was given. To test the theory, I'd have to return in a week and ask for the original beer ordered again. If out at that time, I'd say pretty much, that's what's happening, the thinning of the beer menu to avoid loss. Problem is, the draw to the place, in part, IS the beer menu much as a coffee house's draw is the different lattes etc. If a syrup is always out, then it was never really "in." It would be best to use a chalk board and write in limited offerings than to pass a pub off as being a beer garden of sorts only to learn it's really just a bar with good burgers and a few...
