I have a gluten sensitivity, so ice cream, pudding & fruit was always my "go-to" dessert. My wife read an article in the NYT about Helene Godin's "By The Way" bakery.
Despite living only a few miles away, it's at least a 20 minute drive depending on traffic. I'll admit, my wife had to "drag" me there, because I really had no overwhelming urge to include bakery items like cakes and cookies in my diet. Then I went. And tasted!
I'm kind of glad that they're in Hastings-on-Hudson. 1) It's a really scenic town that is a nice change from where I live, so it makes the trip special. 2) If BTW was in my town, their bakery items are so good I'd probably have to live there!
Helene Godin and BTW are a godsend for people like me who require a gluten-free diet. For others, you have to taste it to believe it. Truly better than anything else I've had (prior to AND AFTER being gluten-free.)
I love their chocolate covered macaroons (which they told me were seasonal, but come on, us gentiles need love in the "off season" too!) Their carrot cake is delicious (and something I'd give up my beloved ice cream for in a NY minute.) I also enjoy their cupcakes which are like mini versions of their cakes.
Bottom line, even when I go in without having ordered ahead of time, I have never been disappointed in any purchase I ever made...wait, that's not true. I HAVE been disappointed. Disappointed I didn't think to buy MORE than I did. REALLY.
P.S. I used the homophones "there" and "their" in the correct context. But it's not amazing, because I support good grammar everywhere. Even on...
Read moreA friend from Westchester (NY) had gifted me several almond cookies years ago, pre-pandemic. Although I loved the cookies, at the time, I felt that I couldn’t justify the trip. I live in Bergen County (NJ) and although I had not ventured to the Bakery, i never forgot how incredible those cookies were. I had had some BTW items purchased at Whole Foods but they weren’t the same (although I do adore the Madelines from there). This Saturday, the stars aligned and my husband & I made it to the shop in Hastings. OH MY! We purchased a bunch of goodies to freeze. My favorites? Amy Cake and Blondies. I still love the almond cookies but…. SO WORTH THE TRIP! So worth the price - gluten free, dairy free, & kosher. A HUGE part of my AMAZING experience at the bakery was the fabulous help - SHYANA was THE BEST. She was extremely helpful, friendly, kind, & patient with my questions and indecisiveness. Although we had placed an advance order, being in the shop with all these edible beauties was overwhelming - we bought more while there. It took years for us to get there but we already plan to go back within a couple of weeks. The entire experience of the BY THE WAY Bakery is over the top - from their adorable shop, cute packaging, lovely to look at and delicious to eat baked goods, and top staff = Shyana. Many, many thanks!...
Read moreThis is the real deal. AMAZING treats. We have tried many GF bakeries across the coasts and this is tied for top place in our opinion. We visited the Hastings-on-Hudson location. The staff were friendly and didn't judge us for the copious amounts of treats we bought. It was clean and cute and an easy location to get to.
The bundt cakes, brownies, and apple twisty thingy were incredibly soft and flavorful. You would not know they were GF and vegan! Hats off to them! The chocolate chocolate cookies were so decadent and rich and chewy. The chocolate chip cookie was more on the crunchy side; still very good. The Lintzers were not as we expected, but we enjoyed the difference. Still very tasty and super satisfying with tea. We also had truly pleasurable cupcakes. The cake was soft and moist, the frosting was superb. We tried over ten different things here and nothing was less than awesome! I highly recommend!!! Thanks, By the Way Bakery! You made our visit to NY absolutely...
