📍1 Buffalo St, Hamburg, NY checking out Augie’s in Hamburg🍔🍟 @Augie’s #burger #buffalo #foodreview #localbusinesses #veganburger

If you ever found yourself sitting elbow-to-elbow at the counter of Mr. Sizzle’s on Buffalo’s West Side—maybe late-night, maybe mid-day with a hangover, or just chasing down that perfect smashburger—then you already know why I made the drive to check out Augie’s on Buffalo Street in Hamburg. And let me tell you: this place is Mr. Sizzle’s, just in a new zip code, with the same attitude, the same unapologetic flavor, and a fresh name that hits especially close to home for me. Let’s start there—Augie’s isn’t just a nod to a new chapter. It’s named after the owner’s son, and that alone made it special for my family. My eldest is August (we call him Augie), and pulling up to a burger joint with his name in bold letters on the front? Let’s just say it was an instant hit with the kids—and with Dad. But more than the name, Augie’s captures the spirit of what made Mr. Sizzle’s so great: - That crave-worthy menu that balances the art of a classic smashburger with some truly fun, indulgent creations. - Hand-spun milkshakes, salty crinkle-cut fries, and pickles that punch above their weight. - A vibe that’s cool but not trying too hard—bright colors, retro signage, punk rock energy, and friendly faces behind the counter. The menu is familiar in the best way. You’ll find the same Sizzle Burger DNA alive and well here—smash patties with crispy edges, American cheese melting into every crevice, a tangy sizzle sauce, and buns that hold up without getting in the way. They still nail that sweet/savory/crunchy balance that made the original a cult favorite. I’d written one of my most glowing food reviews ever about Mr. Sizzle’s back in its heyday—and if that was their debut album, this is the killer follow-up. They didn’t just copy the formula—they evolved it slightly, adapting it to the Hamburg crowd while staying true to the food that put them on the map. The staff was attentive, the vibe was playful, and the music made it feel like more than just a meal—it was an experience. My boys devoured everything, and I’ll be honest, I caught myself grinning a few times just watching them enjoy a place that brought me back to my own favorite burger days. If you’re in Hamburg or even within a 30-minute drive, Augie’s is worth the trip. For those of us who mourned the eventual change at the city location, this feels like a resurrection—and maybe even a second chance to fall in love with the burgers that spoiled us for everything else. It’s not just a burger joint. It’s Augie’s. And for this dad, that name alone makes it a must-visit.

When we first arrived we decided to have a drink or two at the bar because why not? Now the female bartender was a BOSS. She was managing a large area on her own, instructing staff and generally running everything. Love to see it! Her ability to create DELICIOUS cocktails was impressive. I had the Early Bird which was a cocktail when you still want to appear healthy at a bar with carrot, ginger and herbs! And my friend had a draft beer. Now when we ordered, the girls were nice but why is there so many just standing behind the counter?? There’s ALOT on the menu to choose from so good luck. This is where it went downhill fast. Our burgers weren’t warm at all. What was clear is that they didn’t cook the fried chicken first and the beef was just sitting around. Now what is going on with the onion? I ordered the Mothership but was really confused as to why the onion lengths were so long??Whoever is in the kitchen needs to cut the lengths in half again, because that’s a potential emergency situation waiting to happen! The bacon in my friend’s burger Cora Explorer was inedible and beyond cold, like it was just sitting around and not cooked fresh. Fries were delicious, the Mac n cheese served in a larger looking cup was tasty. Also no bottled water?? Someone needs to take control of the line in the kitchen and communicate effectively, because this will drive away business. A cold burger should be criminal.

I was really surprised when I first walked in with what they had done with the place. It’s gorgeous inside. It’s fun, it’s spacious (no pun intended), it’s definitely a chill spot that Hamburg residents are going to enjoy all day long very soon. I had the P. Buster Burger, the Maxed Out Mac, and the P. Buster Banana Milkshake. The burger was cooked great. Next time I’ll get it with an extra patty and extra toppings. But for $10 it was totally fine. The Mac & Cheese was topped with/mixed with bacon and hot honey and it’s a great combo. I was thoroughly impressed with that. I expected to like it, but I liked it more than I had expected. The milkshake was literally the thickest milkshake I’ve ever had. I didn’t even know you could classify that as a milkshake. That can be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it. On one hand you’re going to drink it slower and it’s going to last longer AND you’re getting your money’s worth because that’s a $10 milkshake. On the other hand, it’s extremely filling and heavy, but again - definitely getting your money’s worth. Great milkshake overall too. Burger was a 8/10, milkshake was a 7.8/10, Mac & Cheese was a 9/10 or higher. Staff is very friendly and helpful. They’re not a sales force but they were certainly selling me on the entire menu. That’s how you know the food is actually really good before you even order. When the staff is fully convicted that this is the place to be and there’s zero hesitation. It’s refreshing to see this business operating as a team that feels like they genuinely love to be there. Only reason it didn’t score higher is because it’s not Gordon Ramsay level food, but I don’t think it’s really meant to be so that’s okay! Good, quick food, good people, good location. Can’t miss it. Stop in and try it. Maybe hit them with a “Surprise me!” and enjoy whatever they ring in for you. You’ll definitely be happy with your...
