Uncle Larry’s Rustic Inn — Restaurant in Town of Hartford

Our group of friends went to Uncle Larry’s for the Thursday night rib and chicken special. As an event planner for a club for over 10 years, I plan at least one dining event weekly. This will be a very mixed review. In summary the food was 4.0 and waitress service 1.5 out of a possible 5. The ribs(not baby back as advertised) and chicken were delicious, warm and an ample serving size. The only complaint was the confusion of all the various add on prices for potatoes and variations available for the type of chicken pieces. Most places offer potato choices included in the price of the entrée. We had reservations and waited at least 15 minutes for someone to recognize our presence. Once we were seated we had to ask for menus. After another 15 minute wait and after asking twice we received our water. Since we requested separate checks which she would not do (even though we were there at 4:00 when the dinner rush had not begun), several drinks were obtained by us going to the downstairs bar ourselves. The Half Price Happy Hour drinks were watered down to half. She would not take cash for drinks to help us avoid confusion when we needed to split up the bill. After she finally took our order, a gentleman (very personable and accommodating) brought us our food. The waitress rushed by once to ask how things were. We had to wait for 15 minutes after asking to get our bill. All this time none of our used plates, glasses etc. were removed. The service issues were not due to short of staff as people understand the times we live in. Our issue was in the lack of consideration and attitude and lack of performance by our waitress. I help several elderly in the area by running errands for them in this Pandemic. There's one gentleman, who is immunocompromised that just LOVES the burgers from here, so I call it in about once or sometimes twice a week, then deliver it to him. Lately, he's not been the happiest about his orders as it seems the attention to order detail is going downhill. Last week, evidently it was lukewarm, even though I gave a "curbside pickup for 5:15". I waited and waited outside the restraunt for almost 40 minutes. I went in finally (I had forgotten my phone in my rush out the door) and they did apologize after commenting it was my fault for not stating it was curbside. I didn't argue, what was the point, when it was obvious during the order she was being trained on how to do a phone order to begin with. Today, the order was evidently completely wrong and the fries were cold. I was supposed to pick up at 6:15....i arrived by 5:55 thinking I would have to wait a few minutes, which I didn't mind. The order was packaged and ready to go at the edge of the bar when I walked in. Hopefully, it's just a temporary thing as he really loves the burgers from this place. I tossed the fries into his oven for about 10 min, removed the second patty (he only ordered a regular burger), added the cheese and he was happy. I gave the excuse that maybe he got the wrong order by mistake....I didn't mention the place was pretty empty and three waitresses were utterly bored. Yesterday we tried 5 different places around Hartford for a Friday night dinner for our family. Between staff shortages and being closed for various other reasons, we finally found Uncle Larrys Rustic Inn. My wife had the Fish Fry, I had the VIP Burger, 2 kids had Mac and Cheese and 1 kid had Mini Corn Dogs. All of us loved our food. The burger was enormous, cooked a perfect medium and had the perfect mix of sweet and tangy. My wife said the fish was cooked great. It was moist throughout and the sides were proportioned big enough to end up with extras by the time she was full. The Mac and Cheese was homemade and very cheesy. The Rustic fries were a crispy on the outside, hot and moist inside. The Bloody Mary's I had were an appetizer in themselves with skewers of pickle, mushrooms, olives, cheese and beef stick. They were a bit spicy for my wife but I thought they were perfectly balanced. Our waitress Nichole was great. She got the order exactly right, she was great with our young kids and we never had a thirsty moment waiting for refills. Our entire family was pleased with our visit and that is unusual. The only negative is that I didn't order a second burger to-go for today!
