We’ve been waiting to try Mateo’s for a while but since it is new and popular every time we’ve stopped by the wait times have been too long. We finally got in without a wait, probably because it was cold and rainy. The layout is not ideal as there are a number of tables right near the front door as soon as you walk in as well as right along the bar. We were seated at the table by the front door. Our server was very friendly and efficient. The main reason for the 5 star rating is the food. It is not typical Mexican and all of our meals were excellent. I’m hoping as the hype of being the new restaurant wears off the waits will go down and we will definitely be back.

Had such a great time at Mateo's! I should have taken more pictures of the food because everything we ate was fantastic. I LOVE that they have quite a few gluten free options, but I'm really hoping one day they will explicitly write which options are gluten free right on the menu - seriously, the Celiac community needs more options in Wantagh, I would have eaten here so much sooner if I knew GF was available!! But our waitress Evelyn was so lovely and knew right away which options were gluten free for me. The street corn and birria tacos stuck out as my favorites. I already can't wait to go back and try more.

Friday was our first time at Mateo’s! My husband Michael and I had a lovely time and our bartender Liz was amazing. She mixed the best drinks and provided us with great suggestions for different plates to try. We will definitely be returning soon! Highly recommend!

Ordered delivery from here today, Valentine’s Day, around 6pm via Door Dash. I understand it’s a holiday and they are probably very busy. We aren't going out because we are all sick, my kids (5 and 8) have the flu. However, I was able to place my order on Door Dash that came to almost $200. We waited about an hour and 15 minutes and the Dasher contacted us that they weren't accepting orders. We tried calling the restaurant and no one is answering the phone. It took us a long time to actually contact Door Dash to rectify that we couldn't get the order and needed a refund. We are all starving and miserable. How unprofessional of this restaurant to not even answer the phone. If you aren't takIng orders online, then turn off that feature on the food delivery apps. Now it’s Valentine’s Day, we have no food after waiting almost 2 hours to get our food that never came and a refund, and this place sucks. Horrible customer service. Plenty of other Mexican restaurants in the area, we will not be ordering...

When we arrived around 6:30 pm, Saturday night, my wife and I were informed that it would be about 25 minutes for a table, but that we were more than welcome to sit and eat the bar, which we did. We each had a Mahai fish taco as an appetizer. The presentation was brilliant, the mahai was plentiful and tasty, but the star of the show was the roasted baby onion, which appeared decorative and proved to be delicious in taste and texture.

For the main course. my wife opted for a steak quesadilla, medium rare. The steak was cooked and prepared perfectly, and as she shared a wedge, in exchange for a few bites of my Enchiladas con queso y salsa verde, I can attest that the steak was much more than the grizzled afterthought, which is typically found in lesser establishments.

My Enchiladas were phenomenal and tasted as good as they looked. Although full, I opted to try the coconut flan at our server's recommendation. It was perfect as promised. A wonderful meal in a lovely, yet...

Unfortunately we did not get the chance to try the food. We walked in and were seated there were several children in this place was more like a day care than a restaurant at 7pm the screaming kids were more than enough to make us want to leave.we asked to be seated a bit further away from the screaming kids(I have children of my own but I go out to enjoy my time not to have to deal with other ppls kids!) & as I was about to order a big roach crawled up next to my table. The waiter killed it and with that we got up and left with out even ordering anything. I was sad bc we were dying to try this place. Please get an exterminator & maybe we might try it in the future. Honestly very disappointing as I had heard good things...
