Catharsis Bar & Grill — Restaurant in Town of Mount Pleasant

The place had a great sounding menu, so we tried it. We got a wine and beer then the zucchini app. App was good. Pita and oil with olives starter, like the old school bread and butter was nice before the app, was great. Place was dead but we like it quiet. Ordered the skirt steak over pasta and gyro sandwich. All was fine and tasted good. My issue was the menu had prices like the wine was $10 but the check said $10.40. Everything had a 4% increase on it. When I asked the server about the addition she said it was tax. When I asked about the sales tax on the bill that was also added to the 4%, she insisted it was a tax. We paid the full amount and went on our way. I know things are tough these days. My B-in Law has a restaurant in another town not near here, so I get it but to add 4% and not know why is a shame. I can only assume it was a Credit Card fee but saw nothing on the website, menu or check that stated that then the server not knowing either didn't help me...

I ordered at 1202pm today from my office, seamless said food would be ready in 20 mins, I come by 30 mins later, food still not done. I wait in the restaurant another 30 mins food still not done & restaurant is completely empty except for 1 table & theres no other deliveries. The 1 table came in around 45mins into me waiting for my order & they got their food before me, and they ordered beef, which takes far longer to cook! I kept asking about my order, I was being very patient, but they kept saying 1 more min. Which turned into waiting 1 hr and 15 mins with no staff updating me on my order. I only ordered rotisserie chicken, yucca fries & white rice. The rice was overcooked, 1 piece of chicken was dry , and the other was undercooked and pink inside. The yucca was also kinda soggy/oily & was dismantled in the containerafter i opened it. Thankfully, Seamless gave me $5 discount, but this was a bad experience, and I was very late for work! Sad because I love...

update 5/29/25: last time I was here, the wings & tacos were 100% legit. Today, I had a skirt steak & tostones appetizer that was legit... one of the BEST appetizers I've ever had. Theb ordered lamb chops, with lemon potatoes and sweet plantains, and this was the lind of meal this neighborhood has needed for a very long time. They also do brunch. This place should legit have a line out the door 5 days/week.

CAM'T RECOMMEND THIS PLACE STRONGLY ENOUGH.

EXCELLENT spot in Hawthorne! Had the octopus and branzino last week, and wanted to try lunch... it did NOT disappoint. Excellent birria tacos. Buffalo wings (fresh, not frozen) had an excellent flavor, but were more mild than hot.

It's hard to find a place that does tacos and wings well while still being capable of fine dining (branzino, lamb chops, ceviche, etc.) But Catharsis NAILS it.

Definitely coming back for some football...
