The Beehive — Restaurant in Town of North Castle

I’d been waiting for a long time to visit this place because we’d heard wonderful things about it. We got a chance to finally stop by this weekend for brunch and were quite underwhelmed, unfortunately. Even though it was pretty busy, we were sat after a few minutes of checking in, so that was great. The place had a cozy feel, the music was not great (to us, we think it was country, maybe?). The food was fine (pancakes were a little thin, but tasted fine, the chorizo bowl was the best dish), nothing terrible but nothing that was soo good that would make us come back). The coffee was sadly, meh. Appreciated the fabric napkins, but was very surprised that ALL their maple syrups and jams were those Smuckers packets you’d get at a takeaway place. This detail immediately took away all the homey charm of the place for us. Our sever seemed annoyed with us after we asked a few questions (he never came to check on us, even though we heard him come by and ask the table behind us how they were doing, we had to get his attention to request the bill after he’d already cleared away our plates vs him asking us if we’d like anything else or the bill). Normally this would be more understandable if it were like 2pm or so and he’d had a long tough day, but we’d come in right before 11am. Anywho, I really wanted to like this place based on reviews, word of mouth and personal recommendations, but between the meh food, the music, and the annoyed waiter, I would not...

When I got here today there was a line out the door and no places to stand / sit without being in the way. You either stand outside in the cold / heat or wait inside in the servers way or behind a door constantly having to move. After being handicapped and standing too long I decided to sit at the bar. Upon sitting at the bar I noticed the poor bartender was doing everything for everyone. The place was infested with flies. Cleanliness is not a priority in beehive, a server came over to get change for a table, left for a moment and came back and grabbed limes for someone with bare hands (without washing them) another server came to make a Bloody Mary, the Bloody Mary consists of bacon...... there was a plate of bacon they had available on the counter for things of that nature. The bacon was UNCOVERED infested in flies and then used in people’s drinks. When I first sat down I thought it was a customers unfinished food waiting to be thrown out, however that was just there for drinks. I am pretty disgusted by this restaurant and will NOT be coming back. Even if I was offered a free meal for my whole family I wouldn’t return. I ordered a steak well done but not burnt and one corner was like charcoal, the French fries were okay, but the environment of the restaurant doesn’t outweigh the taste of food. I have pictures of the flies and bacon however I can’t find a way to add them...

Overall… not bad. However, there are a few things that bothered me about my most recent experience and few times before that (plural, because I do not review places after a single visit) that I wanted to note in a review.

1.) Service has fallen off a bit. I waited longer than I wanted for the waiter to take my order. Also, was given the check before I was finished (wanted to order a cappuccino at the end).

2.) I was asked upon arrival, if I had a reservation. Which I did not. They sat us on the patio outside, which was heated and fine. However, as we ate our entire meal, I notice that there was plenty of seats in the dining room. Most of which were never filled by the time we left.

3.) The food order was not as we expect. The sandwich that I ordered was listed as a panini, it was not a panini. That said it was tasty. What my wife had ordered was just not good. Especially compared to pre-pandemic… it was the Eggs Benedict… the Hollandaise sauce was cold, the egg was soft boiled and not poached, and overall just not satisfactory. Also, the French Onion Soup we ordered was not on the menu, which is one of my favorite items.

I know every restaurant has had challenges since the pandemic, but with so many other lunch options in the area, it’s tough to justify coming back, if this is the direction they are going.
