My fiance who grew up around here brought me to Pizzaland about a month or 2 ago for the first time, and wow--all I can I say is what a gem. I attended SUCO in the 90s, but as this fabulous pizzeria is a bit off the beaten path, I wasn't aware of it. Now that I've moved back up here, I'm so delighted to call this spot one of our favorites.
An unassuming but welcoming atmosphere, the interior could easily be the set for a 1980s movie--the decor is old-school & while spotless, is (according to my man) the same as when he was a kid. And I absolutely love that, as it has a great feeling of nostalgia that brings me back to my childhood (when most of us fell in love with pizza for the first time)! From the warm glow of the stained glass light fixtures to the classic Italian-style paintings, the late 70s/early 80s interior made me feel instantly at home. In a world where so many places are pretentious & overly focused on upscale nonsense trying to 'be' something they're not, I love that this modest yet immaculate pizza & pasta joint puts their focus instead on their quality meals & attentive service, as it should be, and lets the food speak for itself. More places could take a valuable lesson on how this great establishment is run.
The waitresses are both friendly & efficient, and the owner, a merry & affable guy, also makes you feel welcome the moment you step inside, offering you to sit anywhere you like. Even on nights where we arrived on the later side, they never turned us away or rushed our meal.
But let's get to the pizza :)
Oh marone; so delicious. Honestly I lived in the city for 20 years, and it's on par with the better spots in both Brooklyn & Queens (actually a bit better in some cases)! We frequently order half pepperoni/half sausage, sometimes plus meatball or peppers, and just wow - consistently perfection right down to the savory but not acidic or sugary sauce, the quality toppings & cheeses, and the crisp yet tender crust - even eaten cold the next day, it's pure pizza bliss. We've also ordered the entrees--generous portions of classic Italian staples such as spaghetti & meatballs served with bread; you can't go wrong with anything on the menu, really. We love the house salad to start off our meal, served with delicious antipasto-style rolled up Italian salami & ham pinwheels; definitely recommend with some fresh mozzarella atop & their house Italian dressing!
All in all, a perfect relaxing dining experience when you want authentic, reasonably-priced Italian in a comfortable, casual atmosphere with great service & an old-school friendly vibe. Stay golden,...
Read moreJust had lunch with there with a group of 12. We were expected, but food prep was very slow (more than 40 minutes from order to delivery), as the place was busy, and we had only one server. The calzones and pizza rolls were stuffed with filling, but burned on top, and too tough to cut even with the steak knives which were given out. I ordered a hot sausage sub with onions and peppers. When it arrived, the meat was tasteless and I could not find even a single pepper nor onion, nor any marinara to speak of, but lots on mozzarella. About halfway thru I stopped to see the waitress and ask about it. When she finally came back to our room, it turns out they gave me someone else's meatball sub (light on the sauce). She apologized and offered a replacement, but I declined, as I was no longer hungry, the sandwich was not very good, and I was not about to wait another half hour to take home another sandwich. She said I would not be paying for the sub, so I figured no big deal, and no charge. However, when the bill came, I was charged full price for the meatball sub (about a dollar less than the sandwich I wanted), and the fellow who got my sausage and pepper sub got his for the lower meatball price as well. So he got his lunch at a discount, and I paid full price for something I did not order, and did not like. Needless to say, we won't be going back...
Read moreWe were staying at Gilbert Lake State Park and this was recommended as the most consistently good pizza joint in the area by the guy in the office. Only a ten minute drive or so from the park. No delivery at all, which I've never heard of from a pizza place, at least in our neck of the woods. But some of our campers were anxious to head to the big city to get cell service anyway, so no biggie.
We got just pizzas. Disappointed no option for sheet pizzas here, so the price was quite a bit higher to feed the 12 of us with 4 larges than it would have been with a sheet and a large, but the pizza itself was really good! We got one with pepperoni, one with mushroom, one with black olives and one with sausage. Which was the strangest looking sausage we had ever seen, almost looked shaved. One of the omnivores from our group described is as bacon sausage if there was such a thing.
Everyone else thought it was fine so I am outnumbered but I thought the crust was a little too well-done for my taste. But like I said 11 others thought it was fine or just barely dark, so I'll leave it at 5 stars.
Overall good pizza for our vacation and convenient...
