Update 07/18/2025 It has been a while since we visited our favorite Peruvian restaurant. We had our favorites: Rondo Maria, Chicharron de Pescado and of course Pisco Sours and Chicha Sours. Everything was excellent, including the service. Update 10/8/2024 We stopped in for lunch. Everything was amazing! Great service from Joel, great Pisco Sours from Jonathan, and great food from the kitchen. The presentation of each dish was beautiful. Each dish was perfect. I am so happy that we decided to have lunch at La Candela. We highly recommend this restaurant and we will be back more often. I am happy when my family is happy. My wife and mother-in-law are from Peru and love the authentic Peruvian food served here. They rave about the ceviche. I love the Pisco Sours. Andres always takes care of us. The entire staff treats us like family. I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. Try this place! Update: Many things have changed due to covid-19. Restaurant hours. Restaurant staff. Restaurant food. Restaurant service. My family and I have been coming here for years. We miss our favorite Restaurant and staff. We wish the new staff well and hope that they improve. We will be back to give La Candela our support and another chance😔 Update 6/24/2021 Another great lunch with family at La Candela today. Food and service were excellent. Pisco Sours were on point. Thank you Jorge for making us feel like family again

Came here on a Saturday evening. The restaurant was half empty, and 7 of us were seated at a table meant for 6 people. Not that big of a deal. Our waiter came and took our drink and appetizer orders. We asked to please have water for the table. Appetizers came out and we all enjoyed them, but still did not get water. Mind you this was the only beverage some people at the table ordered to drink. Almost 30 minutes after being seated and asking on 4 separate occasions, water was finally brought to the table. We didn’t feel our waiter was very attentive. Everyone’s Entrees came out at separate times, so some people were almost finished eating while others were just receiving their food. They have live music, which was nice. Be cautioned that the volume is very loud, so being seated next to speakers might be uncomfortable. Despite the service not being the greatest, the food was delicious. Everything was fresh and cooked perfectly.

I had gift card for candela I called commack and they told me I had to go to Hicksville because this is where it was purchased. So when walked in, I made sure to ask them if I could use the gift card. It was a $100 gift card btw. So after I eat the waiter said to me that the gift card was not activated that I needed the receipt. And therefore I had to pay out of pocket despite having a gift card. The back of the card does NOT have an activation phone number or website..so how would in activate the card?!? They said to me that the person that bought the gift card had to come or the receipt. When a gift card is purchased, the person pays and the cashier automatically loads the card with cash balance. They are so slick. I will never come back here even if the food was good. BEWARE DO NOT purchase gift cards from la candela!! My coworkers wasted $100 for absolutely nothing!. El que mas tiene siempre se quiere dar de vivo

It's a bit shocking giving them a 1 star but the quality of the food has gone down. Usually this happens to great restaurants throughout the years cause they get real busy, you expect a bit of a drop off... but they REALLY, drastically dropped off. Being Peruvian, this was my favorite Peruvian restaurant, not anymore.

Me and my gf were there today expecting great service and quality food but we were SHOCKED how much they declined in customer service and food quality. From the very moment we got there they messed up bringing out my drink. I ordered a Maracuya sour and they brought out a regular Maracuya drink. Then the salichipapa as appetizer was alright, but they only brought out ketchup and no aji, or mayo to go along with it (usually other Peruvian restaurants will bring out mayo and aji with salchipapa) they used to do that, not anymore. Then I think they forgot about our entrees cause some ppl that got there after us got their food before us. It took like 40 to 45 min for them to bring out our food. The waiter apologized, it wasn't his fault cause he was actually the only waiter working there. It was just a mess.

Anyways, the entrees were not good. I ordered a Lomo candela and that supposedly has shrimp in it and mines didn't come with shrimp, so they gave me a regular Lomo Saltado. I let it go, whatever, but then I go for a bite, the lomo absolutely had no flavor to it. My gf ordered he Tacu Tacu to be fried, they didnt fry it.

I really didn't want to go off like this considering this was my favorite Peruvian restaurant, but I want you guys to better yourselves and go back to the quality service and serving quality food like before.

Hope you guys don't take this review the wrong way and actually look at it as a way to better the quality like it was before.

I'm rooting for you guys to get back to that!!

Til then,...

Bistec a lo pobre y so delicious. The staff is great and food is delicious. Totally recommend coming here for some tasty Peruvian food.

EDIT!

La Candela: A Culinary Gem with Unforgettable Flavors and Exceptional Service

In the bustling culinary scene of New York, there are restaurants that stand out not just for their food but for the entire dining experience they offer. La Candela is unquestionably one of these exceptional gems. From the moment you step inside, you are enveloped in an atmosphere of warmth and hospitality, where the staff's dedication to your dining pleasure is evident from start to finish.

But it's not just the service that sets La Candela apart. It's the food that truly steals the spotlight and leaves an indelible mark on your taste buds. Among the many delights on the menu, the Bistec a lo pobre is nothing short of extraordinary. It's a dish that transcends the ordinary and elevates a simple concept to an art form.

The Bistec a lo pobre at La Candela is a symphony of flavors and textures. The perfectly cooked steak, tender and juicy, is crowned with a luscious fried egg, adding a rich and velvety dimension to each bite. A generous serving of golden, crispy French fries provides the perfect crunch, while a side of caramelized onions adds a sweet and savory note that dances on your palate.

The beauty of this dish lies not only in its exquisite taste but in its ability to evoke a sense of comfort and satisfaction that is unparalleled. It's the kind of meal that leaves you with a contented smile and a desire to savor every last morsel. It's no wonder I'm already planning your return to New York and indulge in this culinary...

I went to the restaurant on Tuesday with my husband on recommendation from my brother. We arrived and were told to sit anywhere. We were greeted and told about the soup of the day. Another waiter came to take our order. We ordered drinks, appetizers and entrees. I noticed as others were seated I noticed a variety of condiments were brought to their tables but none to ours. We ordered fried calamari but no dipping sauce was provided I had to ask the waiter. It then took about 20-25 minutes for our entrees to come while others that came in after us were served their food quite fast. When our entrees were bought to the table which was fried shrimp and fried fish. Again I had to ask for the dipping sauces and they bought one for the both of us. We ordered fried rice and it never came. They only came once to ask how everything was they didn't ask if we wanted more drinks but were constantly refilling peoples water glasses. We really felt as if we were being discriminated. We decided to just have our food packed and leave. They never asked if we wanted dessert or coffee. Our bill came out to $81.67 and gave the waiter a $100 he picked it up and said thank you just assuming that we were giving him the change as his tip. We stood up waiting for our change and finally he realized that we were waiting. He finally brought it over and we left a tip we thought suited the service we received. We will not return and we will not reccomend at all. Don't go here if your Black and Fat because you wont like how you will be served. Very...
