Honestly, the place is nice, the atmosphere is nice, it’s a great location, the temp was set nicely for the evening. They comped our dessert as we were celebrating our anniversary but that could have been because the server had a feeling I wasn’t liking the food.
Here’s the thing, it’s a pricy place, and that’s ok. My wife had the market steak, a bone in dry aged ribeye. It’s listed on the menu but was offered as a special. It was supposed to be served with roasted potatoes and cauliflower but actually came with some kind of carrot/parsnip root veggie medley which wasn’t too bad but could have used the usual salt, pepper, and butter. Neither my wife or I were disappointed by the veggie swap, it was a mistake, no big deal and neither of us really love cauliflower all that much anyway. The steak however is a different story. It was cooked medium rare, as requested, but it looked and tasted as if it had been baked first and then kind of finished real quick on a grill. Like there were grill marks but no sign of the kind of crusty fat or char that you typically expect to see on an expensive steak which is either cooked on cast or over a hot grill. It wasn’t particularly well seasoned leaving it bland and flaccid. Luckily I saved some of the amazing crab fondue from the appetizer to add a little surf to my turf and powered through.
We also had the chicken and waffles. This seems to be a huge trend these days, I’ve had them off a food truck in Toronto and at a new place downtown, locals only, which was pretty good so I decided to give them a shot. What a miss. I was so disappointed in this that I actually deconstructed the thing, ate the bit of waffle which was lucky enough to have been introduced to a wonderful butter infusion of some sort. (Maybe lemongrass or some kind of citrus, it was pretty good) then I ate all the bacon. Finally I turned to the real offenders of the dish, the chicken and inedible waffle. I decided to start with the waffle and loaded up some syrup on it and got some more of it down. Then I turned to the chicken and offered my wife a bit of the breading to see what she thought. She gave me a blank stare and asked what I had just given her because it didn’t taste like anything in particular. I grabbed the salt and pepper grinders and went to work trying to make the chicken passable. I set aside a piece though and broke it down a bit to see where exactly the trouble was. Turns out not only was the breading entirely unseasoned, but there wasn’t any seasoning on the chicken either! Just over-cooked dry, breaded chicken breast.
At this point we gave up and decided to go for dessert and just get out a dodge. Graciously the restaurant comped our dessert, which we returned the favor by leaving a nice fat tip for our server who was Johnny on the spot all night. Which is more than I can say for the gossipy bar staff during our little pre-meal happy hour.
The wine menu is light on by the glass wines (we are red drinkers so I noticed it most there) it’s true to its Napa theme which is cool, but the by the glass wines are all ridiculously cheap bottles which I understand I guess, but weird for a pricy wine joint. I could probably replace every wine on that list with a superior and cheaper by the bottle wine from the finger lakes. It wouldn’t take much to change the name to Label 7 Finger Lakes Eatery and Bar and then you can live up to that little eat and...
Read moreMy partner and I have tried nearly every restaurant in the city and love dining out. Lately, I have had a bad luck streak even at places that I love. Although this eatery is 5 minutes from our home, we always passed it without a second thought. My fiance received a gift card for his birthday to the location, so we gave it a try yesterday night. Located canalside in Pittsford, there are many places a few steps away to grab dessert or sit and people watch when you are finished with your meal. We had an 8:30pm reservation. The place was still packed at this time, which is unusual, but helped to reveal that others have already caught on to the charm of the place. The spacious ground level dining room greets you with warm ambiance and beautiful decor. The room seats many people but remained uncramped, even at our small two-top. In the waiting area, a list of local farms and shares is on display, showing that this restaurant goes above and beyond for fresh, local, and organic ingredients. This is always a plus in my mind, but usually makes the menu overly pricey. Not the case here. I would expect dishes to be much more than they were, it was very reasonable for the large portions provided.
The menu was one page. This is something I generally look for, as a few dishes that are very well done are preferable to pages of mediocre plates. We started with the bread plate and friend green tomatoes as appetizers. We also ordered beer and champagne, and all was lovely. The bread plate was very large and came with a delicious spice, balsamic, and olive oil mixture. It was clear the breads were fresh and local and the variety was wonderful. Fried green tomatoes are a favorite dish of mine and one rarely found in the area. These were among the top 3 I have had and were served with a delicious sauce.
We ordered the tuscan pizza and the pork al pastor enchilada (which was a special) for our entrees. Nothing fancy, right? For American food, Label 7 put a wonderful spin on things. The tuscan pizza was thin and crusty with wonderful caramelized onions on top, delicious. The enchilada was a large portion of perfectly marinated pineapple pork, smoked cheese, creme fraiche, served with lime slices and a very spicy sauce on the side, which were the perfect compliments. The ingredients were fresh and lovely and presentation was wonderful as well. I asked for an extra side of creme fraiche and was brought a large side promptly.
Drinks, appetizers, and full entrees came to a mere 65$. An excellent value for the wonderful environment and local ingredients.
Despite the packed house, all of our drinks and food came out very quickly, but still left us time to chat and enjoy ourselves. Our server was polite and prompt. Though it was an elegant setting, the staff were not at all pretentious, which sometimes happens in our favorite local places. I give this meal 5/5 stars. Just...
Read moreI was going to write a review, but I don't know that I have to now because I agree with all the complaints on this page, I will add a few more details... I have worked in the food service in the past. I don't usually complain, but my experience was extremely disatisfying. I had gone to this resturant many years ago and had found the experience to be warm and comfortable, of course I had only visited their bar at that time and I am thinking that I had one too many glasses of wine while there because this new experience was nothing like the past. I bought a groupon because my husband had never been and I wanted a warm relaxing night out. I wanted him to try it out, maybe find a new resturant to our liking. We arrived early, so of course we let them know and then headed to the bar. The bar and bartender were average. I was disappointed by the atmosphere around the bar. It gave me a fast food/bill greys type of feel. There were families rushing in to eat quickly and being rushed out. We got a table right on time in the dinning area, which was a surprise because going there I had already heard from friends that even on a week night (which this was) you can expect to be sat at least an hour later than your reservation, but I'll take it for a nice night out with my husband. The resturant was not busy as far as I could tell. We ordered a glass of wine at dinner and a bread plate appetizer. ONE HOUR LATER we had not recieved our bread plate, glass of wine, and the waiter had not taken our dinner order. The waiter had apologized and brought our wine. One and a half hour later we had not recieved our appetizer. I have never left a resturant without recieving my meal. We politely informed the waiter that this would be the first time we had to leave a resturant prior to recieving a meal. It was almost10 PM on a week night and we had not eaten dinner yet. There was no compensation for the groupon. The waiter did give us our wine on the house, but nothing other than that. Needless to say we will not...
