Ate here at the Guadalajara Restaurant for the first time this evening. It's exterior is unimpressive and I might not have chosen to go here except that I stopped into the adjacent grocery store yesterday for some authentic tortillas and met the owner who was personable, friendly, and offered to show me his restaurant. I took home a "take-out" menu to peruse. For a Friday evening, it was surprisingly unpopulated. We arrived at almost 7 and were the only people there other than some folks seated in the back at the bar. The music added to the atmosphere and was not loud. Before long, two other tables were occupied w/ happy diners, but that's as crowded as it got. My Chile Rellenos (stuffed w/ cheese) were delicious but lacked the red sauce that I've come to expect. No problem - I just added one of the yummy sauces that were served w/ the chips for an appetizer. We were also served complimentary appetizers - little soft tortillas w/ a mildly spiced meat filling - quite good. I was especially impressed with our waiter's and our cook's willingness to make substitutions: I explained that I was not supposed to eat beans and rice and asked if they would substitute a little salad and/or a little guacamole in their place. My entree arrived w/ the 2 chile rellenos and a nice little salad plus a generous serving of guacamole. I was extremely pleased. My husband ordered Enchiladas Verdes w/ chicken filling. He was pleased, overall, but said that he had ordered it elsewhere when the chicken had visible remnants of a "red sauce" and was in larger, but very tender, pieces. His chicken filling, although good, was diced and a little on the bland side. If it had been my dish, I would have added one of the sauces that came w/ the appetizer, but he elected not to do so. He did say that he liked it enough to come back, though. I would definitely go back. We have been driving over to Suffern to Hacienda don Manuel for our Mexican food fix, and their food is always great. Both the food and service in this place were very good (and a little cheaper) and it's only 1/2 the distance from our house as the...
Read moreThis place has changed a bit. The food is still great, but the service is below mediocre. I went in the other day to pick up FOUR tacos (two beef and two chicken). According to their menu, it should’ve been $14. The worker attempted to charge me $22 because “the prices are different on the machine”. She insisted this was the updated price. But after I requested to see an in-house menu and requested a correction, she called over a manager who spent about twenty minutes trying to figure out. After they figured it out, they charged me $18 ($4 extra for added avocado) -_-. In the end, the manager walked away (no hello, no goodbye, no apology). In the past, I would’ve gotten much more for less here and the service was better ....
