Stone Goat,
St James/Smithtown
Do I, or don't I go?????
Like everyone in the 631 Area Code, I woke up Monday morning to an Ice situation on the roads..
When I arrived home on Sunday evening, the trucks were out salting the roads, so I was a bit surprised by all the ice on the roads in the morning.
I mean, I had places to go, people to see, and things to do!!!đ
But after a bit of urging, and coddling, I got in the car to head up to St James, to have lunch with some friends, at the Stone Goat.
I had heard, and read, a few things about this relatively new restaurant, but, as always, I go with an open mind.
People at our table had Steak and Ale Pie, which came in a cast iron pan.. Nice presentation. They all enjoyed it, and it was a perfect meal for a cold day
Another had the Mac n Cheese.. Again, served in a cast Iron skillet.. She said it was very good
I'm not sure how many Duck Burgers they prepare for Service, everyday, but when the waitress came around, she said there was only one left, for the day. My friend said he would take it ..(next time, I'll speak up lol).. He said it was good, as it was served with a Fig Glaze.
Me? I, of course, ordered the Burger, #114, in 28 months..
On the menu, it's called the Classic Burger...Filet Mignon, White American Cheese, Applewood Smoked Bacon,Sunny Egg, Crusted Toasted Brioche.
I ordered it medium rare, no rabbit food, and NO egg. lol..
What's up with that.??... I just don't get the Egg thing, on burgers...You keep it !! lol And what's a Sunny Egg ? Is that opposed to a cloudy Egg? I'm confused by the verbiage, but not enough for me not to try the burger
It was very good.
But, my tastes lean towards a bit of salty, earthy, and a bit more umami.....
You could tell it was good quality meat.... But, it was a bit too mild in taste, for me to rate it high on my Burger Hierarchy.
Again, it's a solid burger!!
The brioche bun added a lot to the taste, as well. One of the better buns I've had..
The French Fries were also some of the best I've had in a while..
I'm not sure what brand of ketchup they use, but it was really, really good!!!
And the White American cheese was a nice touch, very flavorful
I also had an Old Fashioned, with lunch
It was one of the best I've had in a while.
Quality ingredients, with just the right amount of sweetness to make me smile.
You could not ask for better Service..
Our waitress was prompt, polite, and professional..
She smiled a lot, and was very friendly.
The interior is very nice..
Wood beamed ceilings, a piano in the corner, and a patio out back....
I was impressed by the place.
If you are looking for an "Industrial" type brewery, this is certainly not the place.. It's on the other end of the spectrum, interior decoration wise.
A lot of weird, Human Goat pictures on the wall.. But, whateverđ¤ˇââď¸
It's all well done, though, full bar, nice lighting, proper tables, parking lot, and really good food.
They've only opened in Nov, 2024....
Hope they stick around for a while, because there's a few things on the menu I want to try, Bison Burger, Duck Burger, Steak and ale Pie, and Mac n Cheese!!
I wish them...
Read moreOverall it is a nice restaurant.
We chose it to celebrate a friendâs birthday, looking for a new experience in a location that was convenient for us. The place was busy on a Friday night, including the bar area. If youâre planning on visiting on a Friday, I recommend making a reservation in advance.
A nice touch was the live music that night, although it was hard to hear over the noise of people chatting. The waiter informed us that the outdoor seating area would be opening in about two weeks, which I think would improve the overall experience. Personally, I donât like raising my voice during dinner just to talk to those at my table.
I also liked the decor of the restaurant. The artwork on the walls perfectly complements the overall interior design theme and gives the space a unique character, while the small ceiling lights and beautiful chandeliers create a cozy and casual atmosphere.
The service was friendly and fairly fast.
My experience with the food was a bit mixed. The menu offered some creative options.
I chose the eggplant and lamb for my main course, but underestimated my hunger. The portions were larger than I expected.
The eggplant was both delicious and beautifully presented. However, I think that reducing the amount of breadcrumbs would have allowed the flavor of the eggplant to shine more, as it was somewhat overshadowed. I also appreciated the crunchy honey crust on top, which was enhanced by the chopped pistachios, basil, and spices. As a huge fan of eggplant dishes, I always try to order it when it is on the menu. So if you are an eggplant lover, I definitely recommend trying the Bloomin' Eggplant.
I had the Braised lamb shanks as my main dish, which came with Caribbean spices, coconut yaca mash, queso fresco, and callaloo. The lamb was cooked perfectly, but the puree was quite different from what I expected. I thought it would be a potato mash, but it didn't resemble mashed potatoes at all. I only realized this when I checked the restaurant's website while writing my review and saw the ingredient list. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy the puree; perhaps it was because it was my first time trying it, but I found its texture and flavor to be quite bland. Additionally, the greens were too salty. Overall, I struggled to appreciate this dish, but the lamb itself was delicious.
I chose Coconut crème brule for dessert, and it was absolutely delightful! I can fully recommend it.
My friends enjoyed a dessert featuring ice cream, sorbet and sprinkles on the top. The ice cream was good, and I sampled some as well. Just a heads up, the sprinkles contain tiny white balls that are flavorful but quite hard, so keep that in mind.
There's also the Upstairs Taproom with a separate pub-style menu and a cigar deck that leads to the outdoor pet-friendly patio.
I will probably want to visit the restaurant again with my friends when the summer outdoor patio opens, so we can enjoy the music and try...
Read moreWe wanted to try something different so we headed to The Stone Goat on a Saturday Afternoon for a late lunch. We arrived to busy Bar area which was a good sign given it was mid afternoon. We were greeted by a hostess immediately upon arrival, another great sign of things to come.We sat at the bar but we were offered seating Upstairs as an alternative. Later we did check out the Smaller Taproom upstairs which we will visit at some point.
The Bartender also gave us a gracious greeting and gave us several menus to choose from. Both menus were an eclectic upscale Gastropub type menu with a lot of interesting menu choices and interesting ingredients .We also asked to See the dinner menu just to take a look . I tried the light beer and my wife had the Red ale, both homemade beers were excellent, cold and served in very clean Pilsner type glasses. For Lunch we ordered Duck Wings , the crab cake and the pork belly appetizers. All were very good , rich with robust ingredients and presented very nicely. I loved the pork belly appetizers, crisp and tender with a strip of presumably homemade BBQ sauce atop. I would have loved a spritz of apple cider vinegar or other acid to send this dish over the edge , but overall it was excellent. The crab cake was large and full of good quality crabmeat and some jumbo lump identifiable. If you like crabcakes you will definitely like this one. It was large. Finally the duck wings- I initially had my doubts that I would like these , but this just proved to be contempt prior to investigation on my part. The wings were super crispy, with a great glaze and a very solid light wasabi sauce for dipping . Everything worked . They are rich and you donât need chicken wings with these on the menu thatâs for sure.
Overall , we found the Stone Goat to be excellent and canât wait to return . I would give the food a 4.75 but that wasnât an option. I rounded up to a 5 giving the benefit of the doubt to a kitchen that really looks set up to Succeed and dares to Live on the edge! This is based on my personal tastes of course .
Taylor , the bartender provided bar service that was on point, friendly , professional and efficient. I also spotted an aging fridge through the kitchen door as I passed by , a great sign, so we will be investigating some of those aged dishes in the near future! Kudos to a newer place that hits its own mark , a feat not easily accomplished in the Business. Having spent a combined 30 years in the food and catering business we appreciated everything about the Stone Goat and have already recommended the Restaurant and brewery to friends . We will return many...
