This was our first time visiting Kampai and it was wonderful. The Ambience is that of an actual Tokyo or Kyoto steakhouse with Hibachi, traditional Japanese, and sushi style dining. The staff (female) wear a colorful kimono dress and the males wear black vests and black pants. The hibachi meals are shared with other guests and reservations for these are highly recommended to ensure that your party is able to be together and the show involved with the meal preparation is always fun and entertaining. The traditional Japanese and sushi dishes are amazing and very skillfully prepared. There is also a very diverse selection of wines, cocktails and, beers, and sake from which to choose from. The prices are very reasonable for the quality of food and the portions are generous. This is a family friendly environment but there are plenty of private alcoves available to have a romantic dinner for two without issue. There is plenty of parking and the staff was very friendly and attentive. They take both cash and cards to meet the needs of their patrons. We are absolutely going to come back as our experience was beyond words and recommend this hidden gem to everyone.

I have to echo the reviews with low ratings. Both the sushi and the service left something to be desired. Went in for dinner last night when patronage was sparse, but I was still seated arm-arm with the only two other customers at the sushi bar. Why? I don't care if this is their customary crowd control, but I was there in the late evening when there was hardly anyone in the restaurant. Thankfully they reseated me when I asked, but I didn't appreciate being packed like a sardine at the bar in the first place. I then spent $80+ on two specialty rolls and a sashimi sampler. The "Tornado" is a stacked pile of rolls laid flat on their sides underneath a pile of tempura bits. This sounds delicious until you realize there is no flavor in anything--no sauce, no spice (as advertised), just a mountain of fried bits that mask the fish. The other roll just tasted like green onions--once again no sauce, just an overwhelming garnish. Sashimi-wise, the texture was off for the salmon. The white tuna and regular tuna were passable, but the only thing that tasted really fresh was the yellowtail. To top it all off, I lost an item here with my name on it and they didn't bother to call me. I'm not sure why they bother writing down names and phone numbers before seating people, honestly. When I realized I lost my item here and called 24 hours later, they just casually said "Yep, we have it." Who knows what they planned to do with my item had I not realized I left it there. A diner had called after me when I left behind my items before, so I'm personally bewildered why a so-called classy establishment couldn't do the same. All in all, this place's sushi is mediocre at best. I've had worse for $80+ but I wouldn't recommend the sushi here.

I was very excited to go on a date at what appeared to be a great place to eat in the Binghamton area. Sadly, all of the reviews seemed to be very wrong and misleading. To start off with, it took an hour before we even got any food on our table… and the place was not even busy. Once we got our food the experience only got worse. We ordered the udon noodles and tofu teriyak to split. For some reason, after an hour of waiting the only food that was brought to our table was the rice. The fried rice tasted like it was left in a bucket of sewage water that sat out for at least 24 hours. The white rice wasn’t bad, but that doesn’t mean much because it’s pretty hard to mess up white rice. Then after 20 minutes of only having our rice for some reason, our noodles and tofu finally came out. We were very hungry, and unfortunately we also left very hungry. The noodles tasted like fish soap and the vegetables were straight out of a microwaved bag. We asked for the tofu to be fried, and it was soft and soggy. I’m very disappointed. Go to any other Japanese place, but do not go here.

I had dinner at Kampai while visiting friends in Vestal, and we had an AMAZING omakase experience. I wish I took more photos of our food to do the meal justice, but these few will have to suffice. The head sushi chef was super friendly, attentive to our taste requests (which was just to go on a delicious adventure!) and dished up beautifully crafted plates. The fish was fresh and hearty (no skimping on cuts here!) and the simple vanilla ice cream dessert was made decadent with gold sugar decoration and fruit details. Besides the 12 out of 10 food, Kampai's ambiance is fantastic. While we enjoyed our more intimate dinner experience at the sushi bar, there were larger groups enjoying the hibachi tables, something I would like to try on my next visit. I also appreciated that the restaurant manager took the time to check in on us, which was very thoughtful, especially since it was a busier night. I can understand why Kampai has been in business since 1975 and I look forward to my next visit!

Nine of us had dinner here Monday night for my daughter's birthday. The food and entertainment were great in general. A good time was had by all. Gave only four stars for two reasons. Number one, my wife clearly declined the shrimp in the mouth throw but the chef went ahead and bounced one off her face anyways. It hit her on her glasses (thank God she wears glasses so it didn't hit her eye) and left a big greasy smear on the lens. Not cool!! Number two, we each ordered a sushi roll for our appetizer. I ordered the Fallen Angel expecting a little heat with the Habanero but there was none. Eight were delivered shortly after that. Mine didn't arrive until my dinner came. Not sure what happened there but by then I was ready for my dinner and didn't need it, so it was a bit of a waste. We rarely saw the gal who took our order because they use other people to bring the orders out so I had no chance to ask her where my sushi roll was.

So we have been going to Kampai regularly since before covid. We went weekly for a long stint and at the very least have gone 2x a month. Now I'm not one to eat at the same place all the time but Kampai sucked us in with the amazing sushi and the people that work there who make you feel like you just walked in to a family event. We've introduced many people to Kampai over the years and they've all loved it. We've been treated to so many unique foods and experiences over the years. Reading some of the negative reviews I will say yes Friday and Saturday nights will be super busy especially during the colder months. Be prepared to wait a little bit, grab some drinks, and enjoy yourself. If you're impatient pick a slower night and/or slower time. I've never experienced another restaurant that treats it's guests as good as these guys do. They have earned our patronage for life and we always look forward to our next visit.
