This new ramen restaurant has taken me by complete surprise.
Let me preface by saying, I am somewhat of a food nerd, or I guess you could say "foodie." I do not work culinary as a profession (I nearly did and still nearly have), but I have taught myself since a young age about culinary and have done private events in the past. At the time of this review, I am 30 years old and grew up in Farmington and have lived here most of my life. I have for a long time been disappointed by the local food scene in this area, as compared to food I've experienced in major cities. Obviously restaurants in those cities hold high standards, so I'm not here to judge local places or the people that run them. I actually have not gone into the food business myself because of how difficult it is (to say the least) to run and operate a successful food business, especially in an area such as this. As a foodie, I like to critique. So in my opinion, the food in this area could be better but I'm not saying it's all bad.
There are many great places around here these day but I'm always looking out and hopeful for a new place to come in that meets my standards of the high quality I've experienced in major cities around the US. In my quite honest (and humble) opinion, Hokkaido Ramen House, meets those standards.
For context, this was a Grubhub delivery order. I ordered the Gyoza, the Shoyu Ramen, and the spicy crab roll. I wanted to try a few things since I've never eaten here before, and I know, I took a chance with ordering through Grubhub for my first time eating here, but I was very hungry and exhausted after a long day at work, and it all worked out.
I added a marinated egg to the Ramen and asked for spicy chili paste on the side, which they honored both requests. All of the food came quickly and was hot when it arrived. It was packed well and there were no spills. They packed the broth seperate from the other ramen ingredients, as you'd expect from a ramen place so the non-broth ingredients would not get soggy upon travel. Everything came as ordered and was completely above and beyond my expectations for a restaurant in this area.
The Gyoza was not the best I've ever had (the dumplings were a little greasy, even for pan fried), but it was still very tasty and I would order it from here again, and give the dumplings themselves a 7/10. The sauce on the side was also not the best I've had but also still very good, and give it 7/10.
The SHOYU RAMEN overall was hands down 10/10 and the best I've experienced in this area besides Roc City Ramen in Rochester. It was a very generous portion (Roc City Ramen is actually a smaller portion for comparison, and on both their websites at the time of this review, they currently have similar prices for the Shoyu Ramen). The pork was 10/10 and extremely tender and had a wonderful caramelized flavor from the sear on both sides. The broth was rich and flavorful. I mixed in a little bit of the chili paste into the whole ramen dish and it added a nice kick to the dish. The noodles were very flavorful and held their shape. I was easily able to pick them up and the other ingredients with my chopsticks. The marinated egg was also very tasty and cooked properly.
The spicy crab roll was very tasty. The spice level was like a hotter side of medium. I am not ranking this one because I do not have much experience with eating sushi. But it was very good and I would order it again.
I cannot speak to the experience inside the restaurant since this was a Grubhub order. But I did look on their website to check the ACTUAL non-grubhub prices and it is extremely reasonable and competitive for this quality of food and the ramen portion size. The Gyoza was the typical 6 pieces and the sushi was the standard 8 pieces. The sushi pieces were on the smaller side, but compared with price, it was a fair portion.
Overall, phenomenal food! I definitely look forward trying more things on the menu and coming in person! I highly recommend this place to anyone who enjoys ramen or is looking to...
Read moreOk I'll be the first to say after growing up poor paying more than a dollar for Ramen feels strange to me. I'll give it to them the things they put in it makes it better but I still fight it!
That being said this place is excellent. I ordered the Spicy Beef Ramen and added a marinated egg to it, because I thought it would be cool and I wanted to try one. My wife ordered the Tuna Poke Bowl. As appetizers we had a California roll and Crab Rangoon.
First let me say that food came out so fast it was almost like they started it when we walked in. I bet it wasn't 3 minutes before we had the roll and Rangoon and I know it wasn't a full 8 minutes before the meals came out.
The California roll was very good. I know this is the most basic of all sushi but if the rest are like this I wouldn't hesitate to order more. The Crab Rangoon were my wives favorite, she said they were the best she's ever had. To me they were good and I'd get them again but they compare with others I've had.
My wife loved her Poke Bowl. It had a good amount of Tuna in it and the sesame dressing was great. I had a bite and I would order it. The Spicy Beef Ramen which you will see in many reviews was great. I'm a Pho lover and I picked this because I expected it to be like Pho but with the added Rib and ramen instead of rice noodles. It was exactly that, and I would add the marinated egg every time. I ordered it "regular", they also have a hot and one step up, which I forget what they called it. I don't mind spicy things but I also like to enjoy my food. This was perfect. This had me coughing a few times when I was just spooning the broth into my mouth, so I wouldn't want to go any higher.
I'm still amazed by the speed of this restaurant. That alone would have me coming here for lunch on a time crunch when fast food wasn't sounding good and I wanted good sit down food.
This is a must try even if part of me wants to say...
Read moreI've been patient but excited to see this place open up after almost a year of waiting! Elated to finally try it today.
There's not a ton of ramen options in Rochester, and as a result I basically bounce between the two of them that are pretty good. Thai Chi is fine, and Roc City Ramen is very good as well but it's inconveniently far away for me.
Well, the bar has just been raised! This place is a notable cut above the others. Everything was amazing, staff was totally awesome despite it being the grand opening. Really looking forward to making this my new regular ramen spot.
We got a few things to try since it was our first time, and nothing left us even slightly disappointed. For the appetizer, the crab rangoons were on point. I got a Mango Galaxy tea which was very interesting and delicious. Girlfriend got the brown sugar milk tea, which might be my new favorite beverage!
We both got Spicy Miso with some minor modifications and our orders came out in reasonable time, were great sized portions for the price, and everything tasted immaculate. The pork chashu was both crispy AND melted in your mouth. I didn't know pork could taste that good.
We also got the Beef Curry Rice to share, which was perfectly seasoned, and actually very nicely presented which I didn't expect.
Overall, this is my new favorite Asian-style restaurant in the area. 10/10 would recommend. I will...
