Tucked away on the first floor of a church-turned-market is Maria’s, which we happened upon on our journey around Rochester. It was worth the search and discovery! We had delicious chips and salsa and homemade guac to start - the latter freshly made and perfectly served. The house margaritas weren’t too sweet - a real homemade taste - and came rimmed with salt. The boy had a tasty pink lemonade. For dinner, the enchiladas were savory and filling - I had three of the five filings, and each hit the spot. The made to order bean and cheese mole entree dish was made especially for a vegetarian - our server had no problem substituting for vegetarian, and freely offered vegan options had we required them. The kid had a chicken taco he described as “the perfect taco,” and a side of rice and beans - though he filled up on the guac. The service was personable and attentive, and at times genuinely friendly. The place was full of satisfied regulars, and the tables were clean and felt bright in the natural light. We left quite full and also quite glad. One note: we parked out front by the street and enjoyed winding our way through the church, but clearly most folks park around back. It’s worth the trek!

Maria's is the absolute best in Rochester. I know people fawn over the other place, MA, but that has nothing on Maria's. Maybe nostalgia plays a part, but everyone I've ever brought to Maria's absolutely loves it, and becomes a devoted patron. The staff is all amazing, the margaritas are phenomenal, and it is just a charming place all together. If you're in Rochester and never have been, go. If you're just visiting Rochester, go. It's in the very bottom of The Old Church Mall, go in via the back where the main parking lot is. Get the margaritas, Holy Molé, & Mexican Flag. Really you can't go wrong any way you go here. And the Guac Taco is amazing. FYI, default is a semi fried (I think) soft shell which is amazing.

Maybe this is what is meant by "hidden gem"? We passed it on the first try as I thought it was a church. Parking is in back. We were seated immediately and given tasty chips and salsa. We ordered blanco y blanco chicken enchiladas and also soft chicken tacos. Both were fantastic but I really enjoyed the enchilada sauce the best. The tacos had nice white meat chicken and were served with very good rice and beans. We treated ourselves to the flan for dessert and were not disappointed! So good! I have been dying to find a decent Mexican restaurant out here for 3 years. Finally I have found one we really enjoy. Great friendly staff as well!

Have come twice for dinner. On a Friday night then second visit a Wednesday. Both times service was very very bad. The Friday visit took 1hr 45 minutes to get our food. We were about to get up & leave. How long could it possibly be to make tacos? We were never asked if we wanted anything more to drink waitress not only ignored our table but the 5 surrounding us too. We had no sides just 2 tacos on a huge plate not even lettuce greens to dress it up. Place could be way cleaner. I dropped my napkin and I'm sorry I looked under our booth to get it. I left it there. The 2nd visit on a Wednesday went out with 6 friends. We all asked for separate checks. Service was even worse then the last time. We started comparing stories of this place & asked why we came? Three of the guys said their food was cold. Waitress had no response. Never came back to ask if we needed more drinks nothing until she wanted our dessert order. Only 2 ordered dessert the rest of us were to upset to bother. We waited 40 minutes after dessert to get up & go find the waitress to get our bills to find out she left for the evening! They handed me one long curled up register tape of all our drinks, entrees & desserts. We had asked for separate checks to avoid this mess. They refused to give us separate checks. Our friends said no more Maria's, next time we go to the new Mexican place in town by the AMC...

I am neither Mexican, Spanish, or otherwise Hispanic/Latino etc. I am also not a Mexican food aficionado. That said, this place seems to be about as authentic as I can tell. It was busy, and the service was not the quickest, but it was certainly not outside of reasonable given the number of patrons. The food was quite good, plenty of flavor with just enough spice/heat to add to the taste without making it painfully hot. Options were numerous, and the bar seemed well stocked as well. The offering of margarita flights was unique in my experiences, and was a neat twist on the usual beer flights that I am accustomed to. I don't generally drink tequila, but my fellow diners did seem pleased with the flights, and even in the quality despite a couple of flavors that did not fit their own palette (pumpkin margaritas: a must try once, but don't be surprised if you aren't ordering a second).

The overall atmosphere was very pleasant, and we did have a really good time during our visit. My friends have been known to joke that this place is the only reason to go to Webster. I don't know about the rest of Webster as a town, but I will be returning to Maria's in the near...
