Recently (today) my soon to be husband and I included Beef Haus in our Southern Tier travels after discovering nearby Angelica is a restaurant wasteland. We were pleased to leave the hot sun and slide into a booth in this architecturally interesting and thankfully less bright space. Dominated by brick and what looks like salvaged architectural details from something built in the 19th century, the high ceiling and comfortable coolness were immediately relaxing. We were promptly asked about beverages and given menus by a friendly server. I ordered a Reuben and my honey ordered basically a plate of beef with brown gravy (because Beef Haus 😉). It didn't take long for our order to come, which was good because we were both pretty hungry. I've ordered Reubens from probably a hundred mile radius from where we now sat, so full disclosure, I have not had a Reuben in Zurich, London or Berlin. But having said that, I can say with full confidence, there's not a better place to order and subsequently eat a Reuben if you're within a two hour drive of Wellsville, NY. It was simply delicious. The major disappointment with Reubens is, of course, the corned beef which is almost always too thick or not tender enough. I have ripped a sandwich away from my mouth just to separate myself from a piece of meat. Not here. The corned beef was sliver thin, just the right amount and tender as all get out. Sandwiches can be a pain to eat if they're not well made, but this was satisfaction from beginning to end. My STBH's beef dish probably lacked a bit as far as presentation insofar as it was a mound of beef covered by brown gravy. Maybe a garnish or being served in another piece of dinnerware could be considered, but leaving that aside, he said it was delicious. I noticed another reviewer from Ireland railed at the fact that the beef was thinly cut. I guess that only means you can't please all the people all the time. Thin it was and tender and tasty. Not content with one beef offering, my significant other followed up with Beef on Weck, and again pronounced it very good. I had a generous piece of Key Lime pie and we both had coffee, finishing off one of the most enjoyable lunches we've ever had. Throughout, our server was courteous and attentive. The beef master, who was situated across the room from us, obviously enjoyed his job and took pride in his product. He couldn't claim credit for the corned beef, but acknowledged it too was excellent. For a modest sized and fairly rural setting, Wellsville seems to be above average as far as good places to eat. From today's experience, I would definitely encourage anyone within driving distance, or traveling through to stop at the Beef Haus. You'll be...
Read moreOn the advice of the front desk of my hotel, I walked down Main Street to Wellsville's Beef Haus. I expected it to either be a steakhouse or German restaurant, but both guesses were wrong -- Beef Haus is a bar and grill that specializes in roast beef sandwiches among other food items, including pub-style appetizers, desserts, and entrees that run the gamut from fajitas to pasta.
Food I had during my two visits to Beef Haus included:
Beef on Weck - sliced roast beef on a kummelweck roll. What IS a kummelweck roll? An odd sandwich bun popular in western New York that is actually a kaiser roll topped with caraway seeds and pretzel salt, and then split, with the bottom of the top half brushed with au jus. Though I live in San Diego now, I went to RIT for college, so I've experienced Beef on Weck before -- it didn't do much for me 20 years ago, and it does less for me now. The pretzel salt results in an unevenly salty sandwich. Despite my aversion to the overall concept, Beef Haus's roast beef itself is excellent. I had mine cooked at medium rare. Good bold flavor, lightly seasoned, and plenty tender.
Two Sides - I had the Potato Wedges which were old-school "rustic" potato wedges that are not horrible once they're salted. Cole Slaw is average and perhaps a tad too sweet for me.
Mudd Pie - coffee ice cream sitting on an oreo-cookie crumble-crust with chocolate sauce and whipped cream. First, the bad: the ice cream came out of the kitchen hard and not creamy. The good: everything else -- especially the hot fudge sauce, which was dense, rich, and warm. This is a significantly sized dessert that you should plan to share unless you desire a gall bladder attack.
Cocktails - Beef Haus has a full bar with a limited selection. Don't expect to find single-malt whiskies here, for instance, though most low-end to mid-range call liquors can be had. I stuck with the classics (e.g. Manhattan, Martini, etc.) and enjoyed strong, generous pours on my cocktails.
Beef Haus is a nice small-town restaurant/bar where everyone knows everyone. Food and booze is cheap, people are friendly, and restaurant is clean. After eating nearly everywhere in Wellsville, I wouldn't recommend any other bar/restaurant in Wellsville Village to a business traveler passing...
Read morePrime Rib. Very large very tasty Prime Rib done to order! So we were visiting the area and this place was about 30 min away but we thought we would give it a try. It did not disappoint. I had a King size Prime rib with salad and mashed potatoes The salad was really good and crisp and I believe they make their own croutons which were really good. The prime rib came out med rare as requested and a nice amount of au jus on the side. I'm not huge into seasoning and this literal slab of meat had just a hint which was perfect. The mashed potatoes were a little chunky for my liking but I just mashed them some more, no big deal. I requested butter on the side for the potatoes and it was brought out with the meal. Everything asked for came out wonderful and within 10-15 minutes of order which was also impressive. I liked the dining area as I cannot always hear well when it's loud but this place was not loud and we could have a nice conversation without yelling across the table. I would definitely come back here and would like to thank Kensie for really great service! She stayed on top of everything and thank you too the kitchen staff for preparing a really...
