The promise of breakfast at Slil-Lit Cafe was the motivation I needed to rise early and tackle a demanding day of government office errands in Trenton. Getting a seat was a breeze, and I was warmly welcomed by Adam as soon as I walked in. Although I was tempted by several menu options, Adam patiently and knowledgeably answered all my questions, making it easy for me to decide. I ultimately ordered the grits with American cheese, fried whiting, two over-easy eggs, and a Sprite. My food arrived at the table promptly, and I was immediately impressed by the presentation, a charming cast iron mini Dutch oven accompanied by my eggs on a separate plate. I had never tried fried whiting before, and I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious it was: perfectly seasoned, with a subtle kick reminiscent of Old Bay, but not overly salty. It paired beautifully with the grits, which were honestly the best I’ve had in years, on par with some of the finest I’ve tasted in the South. The American cheese added a mild, creamy touch that’s perfect for anyone new to cheese grits. Next time I’m in town, I’m looking forward to trying them with cheddar! Although the portions were generous enough that I couldn’t finish all my food, I couldn’t resist trying the pancakes, especially given the rave reviews. I ordered the Skil-Lit single pancake side, and it was an absolute standout, this pancake will now be my benchmark for all others. Served with fresh slices of strawberries and blueberries, a dollop of whipped cream, and a pat of butter, the pancake had a delicate, almost yellow cake–like flavor without feeling heavy. In fact, it was lighter than a crepe, with an airy, almost ethereal texture—truly a masterpiece. I’ve never experienced a pancake quite like this before. I realize this might sound a bit over the top for a common breakfast item, but believe me, I’m just as surprised as you are. The pancakes are the "Mystic Pizza" of Trenton. Don’t sleep on this joint, I’m telling you, it’s about to blow up and have a line longer than the N.J. Department of Vital Records. Plus, the tunes they’re spinning?...
Read moreUsed to be a big fan to the point my husband was tired of me ordering from here as my go to. Now the last few times (three spread out over the course of maybe 4-5 months) the food seems to have changed in quality. I had steak bites which was my go to order and they were so gummy I couldn’t actually swallow them just endless chewing. I hoped it was just an isolated experience.
About 2 months ago I ordered the fried fish and grits which I order often if I don’t get the steak bites and the fish wasn’t enjoyable. Dry and not meaty like it used to be. I ordered again today and same issue. The appearance of the fish changed too so I know ingredients were changed. The fish is now long and that’s not how it was before which leads me to believe that maybe they’re using frozen fish and switched from fresh. I couldn’t even finish the meal. The texture was off, dry and some parts didn’t have meat at all just dried out and again not meaty and had an overwhelming fishy taste if that makes sense. My grits were also very runny and they’re usually thick from here.
I’m writing this in hopes management and the owners will see. They seem like really nice ppl who care when I do go inside to have a meal so I hope you take this review as someone who loved the restaurant and hopes the quality of food will return to how it was even just a year ago. I know corners have to be cut sometimes but as a customer, I can taste the difference.
I will try one more time and would love to...
Read moreI've been dying to try this spot for a while. I went with my husband on a Friday afternoon and it was filled with a local crowd which was pleasing. We were told to seat ourselves anywhere and chose a wall booth. Our server was attentive and we ordered lemonade, which we were a bit disappointed with because it was giving Country Time. The fish and grits were bomb and something we'd order again. The fish was flavorful and fried to perfection. The grits were cooked to perfection as well. The presentation was a bit awkward but fit the theme.
Salmon toast was disappointing in presentation. Don't get me wrong, the dish is promising and the taste was there. With that being said, it consisted of four small pieces of baguette, cream cheese, smoked salmon, and everything seasoning. I think it would be better if the baguette was toasted and perhaps cut lengthwise in 2 pieces. Or even some sort of everything bread or bagel. It felt more like an appetizer than a lunch.
Lastly, the potatoes were mid. Not something I'd order again.
Overall I'd give this place another chance because there's plenty more to try on the menu and what we had was a nice change of pace for the area. I'm looking forward to what's to come from this new,...
