We visited the Black Rabbit recently after a day exploring the waterfalls along the Columbia Gorge. The Black Rabbit is more upscale than the usual hamburgers and fish & chips available at most McMenamin’s… But I guess it’s okay to be dressed outdoorsy since it is a vacation destination.
My husband ordered the Wild Boar and the soup of the day, which he enjoyed… I ordered the New York Steak with marsala mushroom sauce (medium rare), fingerling potatoes and braised greens… The steak was closer to medium or medium well and VERY gristly (although the marsala mushroom sauce was tasty)… The braised greens were so salty they were inedible. - Our server was very courteous when I brought these problems to his attention and offered to bring me a new dinner… However, in the time it would take to make me a new dinner my husband would either finish his and we would each end up eating alone, or he would wait for me and eat his dinner cold. In the end I did the best I could with the gristly steak and the server brought me a new serving of greens…
The hostess that greeted us when we arrived was extremely friendly and overall the service was good… Except when we ordered a desert to share and they forget to bring us any utensils. I requested two spoons, the waitress gave me a funny look and returned with only one very dirty spoon.
For the price we paid I would have to say it was a disappointing experience… We probably won’t...
Read moreFantastic restaurant located inside the beautiful McMenamins Edgefield. We stumbled upon this place on our way to the Multnomah Falls. We took a stroll around the property and decided to have breakfast there. So we found Black Rabbit Restaurant and gave it a go. We sat at the bar where a happy young man by the name of Jason was working. We helped us pick a couple of beers and then our food. We went with the French Toast and the Egg dish with Beet hash. Jason spoke so highly of it since that was a new dish that I had to give it a try. All the workers were so friendly and so happy to be there. Jason even told us that he moved from Long Beach, CA and now lives across the street from Edgefield. Shortly after our food came out and wow! The French Toast had caramelized pineapples on there. It was incredible. Then I got to try the beet hash. It was hands down the best thing I’ve ever had. It was mixed with bacon and perfectly cooked scrambled eggs on top. I couldn’t get enough of it. We not only finished the entire plate but basically licked whatever that was left on the bottom of the plates. It was a fantastic way to start our Portland trip. Thank you Jason for being so awesome...
Read moreWent to the Dylan concert last night, and I must admit, this venue is sorely lacking. We arrived early, but not early enough. It was a looong hike through a hilly, grassy field and gravel trail to finally get to the actual venue, only to find it very crowded, and few open grass spaces left. Having to use the rest room, only to find a row of honey buckets with foot-pump operated hand wash stations. This does not enhance the experience in a positive way. The music was great, however, and it was a pleasant time. Once we left, there were no ushers or signs to direct the way out, so another long hike up the gravel trail, which is now dark and unlit. We passed a woman carrying her infant, and hoped she did not trip. There were plenty of "alcohol enhanced" revelers, and this trail is a not a good mix. I seriously doubt I will go back to this place to see live music, unless they add restrooms at a minimum. It is called McMenamins, but it might as well be in the middle of a cow field for the amenities provided. (Anyone who was there patronizing McMenamins other operations before the show had to go to the back of the...
